"Die Schöne Müllerin" op. 25, D 795 by Franz Schubert is a song cycle based on poems by Wilhelm Müller. This song cycle, together with "Winterreise" (also a lyric by Müller) and "Schwanengesang" is one of the most important song cycles in world music literature. The Dessau poet (1794-1827) wrote a series of poems in 1823 that tell of a young man's unfulfilled love for the "beautiful miller", poems that may be autobiographical (for Wilhelm Müller's love for the poet Luise Hensel). In the same year, 1823, Franz Schubert set twenty of these songs to music. That was exactly two hundred years ago.

Die schöne Müllerin“ op. 25, D 795 von Franz Schubert ist ein Liederzyklus nach Gedichten von Wilhelm Müller. Dieser Liederzyklus gehört zusammen mit „Winterreise“ (ebenfalls eine Lyrik von Müller) und „Schwanengesang“ zu den bedeutendsten Liederzyklen der Weltmusikliteratur. Der Dessauer Dichter (1794-1827) schrieb 1823 eine Reihe von Gedichten, die von der unerfüllten Liebe eines jungen Mannes zu der „schönen Müllerin“ erzählen, Gedichte, die möglicherweise autobiografisch sind (für Wilhelm Müllers Liebe zur Dichterin Luise Hensel). Im selben Jahr, 1823, vertonte Franz Schubert zwanzig dieser Lieder. Das war vor genau zweihundert Jahren.
