THE MAGIC FLUTE
a new look by Romeo Castellucci

Admittedly, The Magic Flute was already taking place in an unknown country, but now it is about to approach even more mysterious lands... Because here it is delivered to the radical imagination of Romeo Castellucci, formidable creator of images, paintings prodigious, eventful, unforgettable. Visions nourished each time by deep reflection, by audacity and a clever mix of opulence and craftsmanship.

Confronted for the first time with Mozart , the Italian director finds here the material of an unpublished story: “ We must assume the philosophical weight of this piece. It's not just something light, fun, a fairy tale. It's a very charged opera at the ideological level, a battle between the feminine principle and the patriarchy, between the horizontal line and the vertical line. To better " break the toy of narration ", Castelluccidecided to remove the spoken dialogues here, and to marry a resolutely feminist party: that of the Queen of the Night, figure of eternal and tragic mother, delivered to the machinations of Sarastro. In the service of this confrontation, he imagined an explosion of feather curtains, tunnels, shields, open baroque palaces with all their entrails out. A dark phantasmagoria that gives way to the stripping of a deserted stage, to better touch on the essential: “ There is in Mozart a very high degree of spiritual life which allows him to approach the nakedness of life ”.

The very personal vision of The Magic Flute proposed by Romeo Castellucci is not recommended for a very young audience.

un nouveau regard de Romeo Castellucci

Certes, La Flûte enchantée se déroulait déjà dans un pays inconnu, mais voici qu’elle s’apprête à aborder des terres plus mystérieuses encore… Car la voici livrée à l’imaginaire radical de Romeo Castellucci, formidable créateur d’images, de tableaux prodigieux, mouvementés, inoubliables. Des visions nourries à chaque fois par une réflexion profonde, par l’audace et un savant mélange d’opulence et d’artisanat.

Confronté pour la première fois à Mozart, le metteur en scène italien trouve ici le matériau d’une histoire inédite : « Il faut assumer le poids philosophique de cette pièce. Ce n’est pas seulement quelque chose de léger, d’amusant, un conte de fées. C’est un opéra très chargé au niveau idéologique, une bataille entre le principe féminin et le patriarcat, entre la ligne horizontale et la ligne verticale. » Pour mieux « casser le jouet de la narration », Castellucci a décidé de supprimer ici les dialogues parlés, et d’épouser un parti résolument féministe : celui de la Reine de la Nuit, figure de mère éternelle et tragique, livrée aux machinations de Sarastro. Au service de cet affrontement, il a imaginé une explosion de rideaux de plumes, des tunnels, des boucliers, des palais baroques ouverts toutes entrailles dehors. Une sombre fantasmagorie qui laisse place au dépouillement d’un plateau désert, pour mieux toucher à l’essentiel : « Il y a chez Mozart un très haut degré de vie spirituelle qui lui permet d’approcher le nu de la vie ».

La vision très personnelle de La Flûte enchantée proposée par Romeo Castellucci n’est pas recommandée pour un très jeune public.
