When "The Portrait of Dorian Gray", the only novel by the Irish writer Oscar Wilde, was published as a book in London in 1891, it caused a scandal because of its alleged immorality. The story of the young dandy Dorian Gray, who mysteriously does not age, and whose face always remains the same beautiful, no matter how dissolute he lives, was too much for the moral standards of Victorian society. But the fascination of the human longing for eternal youth and the always acute question of the fundamentals of right and wrong has remained unbroken to this day. And so the material has been filmed or edited for the theater stage again and again since the beginning of the 20th century.
