L’invention du recitar cantando à Florence à la fin du XVIIe siècle a bouleversé l’approche et l’expression musicale des sentiments. L'interprète, désormais soliste, devient le porte-parole des affetti véhiculés par une parole poétique que la musique ne fait que prolonger. L’opéra naît ainsi du madrigal polyphonique devenant monodique, les instruments de la basse continue se substituant aux autres voix pour mieux renforcer le pouvoir pathétique de la parole. Monteverdi est sûrement l’un des protagonistes de cette évolution qui trouve sa sublimation dans son Orfeo, tout premier opéra de l'histoire.
 
Le pétillant ensemble Il Grovoglio nous donne à écouter cette naissance avec des musiques de
Monteverdi, Kapsberger, Cavalli, Da Gagliano, Belli, Caccini…

The invention of the recitar cantando in Florence at the end of the 17th century upset the approach and the musical expression of feelings. The performer, now a soloist, becomes the spokesperson for the affetti conveyed by a poetic word that the music only prolongs. The opera is thus born from the polyphonic madrigal becoming monodic, the instruments of the basso continuo replacing the other voices to better reinforce the moving power of the spoken word. Monteverdi is surely one of the protagonists of this evolution which finds its sublimation in his Orfeo, the very first opera in history.
