Een ‘afscheid van de achttiende eeuw’, zo wordt Beethovens Eerste symfonie wel eens genoemd. En al klinkt ze nog erg klassiek, toch draagt ze al de pittige en heroïsche signatuur van de componist. Samen met het Tweede pianoconcerto slaat de symfonie de brug naar de negentiende eeuw, waarin Beethoven zijn romantische muziektaal tot volle wasdom bracht.
