«In 1936 four young daredevils tried to be the first to conquer the north face of the Eiger. The first attempt the year before was fatal. The radical nature of the mountain, which knows no mercy, which scoffs at the megalomania of the little man and yet finally embraces and takes him in, forms one level of the opera. The mountain walk of the four men is the other - they brace themselves against the weather and the mountain wall.
