Antonia Padoani Bembo (circa 1640 – 1720) led a life that was extremely atypical for a woman of her time. The daughter of the doctor Giacomo Padoani, who worked in Venice and Padua, was a student of Francesco Cavalli, soon known as "la figlia che canta" and would probably have married Francesco Corbetta, a well-known guitarist, if her family had not invited her to marry the Patrician Lorenzo Bembo would have urged. This turned out to be a problematic personality and a notorious liar. Antonia then fled Venice to Paris because the city council did not want to agree to a divorce. With the support of Corbetta, who became Louis XIV's instrumental teacher in Versailles, she too was eventually to gain a foothold at the court of the Sun King.

"A Venetian in Paris" traces the path of Antonia Bembo as well as the special development that her compositional work took throughout her life. Based on the "Produzioni armoniche", written between 1695 and 1700, this path can be traced in an almost ideal way, starting from emotionally charged settings of Italian poetry, towards the primarily sacred music of her later years.

The Accademia degli Stravaganti ensemble, led by the internationally renowned harpsichordist Anne Marie Dragosits, who was born in Tyrol, presents the music of the bembo with selected works by Cavalli and Barbara Strozzi, but also by Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, whose oeuvre is one of the most important established in the French high baroque period. Also taking part are the soprano Ulrike Hofbauer and Leila Schayegh on the violin, both outstanding masters of their craft.

Antonia Padoani Bembo (um 1640 – 1720) führte ein äußerst untypisches Leben für eine Frau ihrer Zeit. Die Tochter des in Venedig und Padua tätigen Arztes Giacomo Padoani war Schülerin von Francesco Cavalli, bald als «la figlia che canta» bekannt und wäre wohl den Ehebund mit Francesco Corbetta, einem weithin berühmten Gitarristen eingegangen, wenn nicht ihre Familie sie zur Heirat mit dem Patrizier Lorenzo Bembo gedrängt hätte. Dieser entpuppte sich als problematische Persönlichkeit und notorischer Lügner. Antonia flüchtete daraufhin aus Venedig nach Paris, da der Rat der Stadt einer Scheidung nicht zustimmen wollte. Unterstützt von Corbetta, der in Versailles zum Instrumentallehrer Ludwigs XIV. avancierte, sollte es schließlich auch ihr gelingen am Hofe des Sonnenkönigs Fuß zu fassen.

«Eine Venezianerin in Paris» zeichnet den Weg von Antonia Bembo wie auch die besondere Entwicklung nach, den ihr kompositorisches Schaffen zeitlebens nahm. Anhand der zwischen 1695 und 1700 zu Papier gebrachten «Produzioni armoniche» lässt sich dieser Weg auf eine geradezu ideale Weise nachvollziehen, ausgehend von emotionsgeladenen Vertonungen italienischer Dichtkunst, in Richtung der vornehmlich geistlichen Musik ihrer späteren Jahre.

Das unter der Leitung der in Tirol geborenen, international gefragten Cembalistin Anne Marie Dragosits stehende Ensemble Accademia degli Stravaganti stellt der Musik der Bembo ausgewählte Werke von Cavalli und Barbara Strozzi aber auch von Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre gegenüber, deren Œuvre sich als eines der bedeutendsten aus der Zeit des französischen Hochbarocks etabliert hat. Mit von der Partie sind die Sopranistin Ulrike Hofbauer und Leila Schayegh an der Violine, beide hervorragende Meisterinnen ihres Fachs.
