For more than 50 years, music lovers have flocked to Carnegie Hall for the chance to hear Emanuel Ax in recital. A world-class interpreter, with every performance Ax reveals profound nuances from legendary composers’ works. His reading of Schubert’s Four Impromptus, D. 935—featured on this program—is imbued with the composer’s “inexhaustible lyrical flow” in “even the most unassuming” components (The Guardian). Ax also takes audiences on an eclectic musical travelogue through the United States in Barber’s Excursions. The program concludes with works by Robert Schumann, including the ever-popular Arabeske in C Major and the virtuosic Fantasy in C Major, featuring a movement the composer professed as “the most passionate I have ever composed.”
