Britten's Sacred and Profane choral cycle is unique in its kind. This is the composer's last work for choir without accompaniment (written in 1975) and his last appeal to medieval themes. Anthem, drama, lyrics, pastoral and even an English carol - the spiritual and the mundane are combined in one cycle. But, despite its charm, this choral work by Benjamin Britten is
still rarely performed.
Paul Hindemith wrote the Horn Concerto in 1949 for renowned horn player Dennis Brain. The first performance took place in Baden-Baden under the direction of the composer a year after the creation. This piece is very unusual. An interesting choice of groups of instruments for the orchestra: woodwinds, strings and timpani. The concerto is written in the traditional three parts, but upon closer examination it turns out that the third is divided into several more parts! Despite the apparent abundance of numbers, the Concert lasts only 15 minutes. The composer himself spoke ironically about this: “Due to the ever-increasing prices for music paper, only small scores will have to be written . ”
Novaya Opera presents the first Russian performance of the oratorio Simonov's Passion!

The author of the oratorio, Kaia Saariaho, is our contemporary, cosmopolitan composer who was born in Finland. Today, her works are heard all over the world, but in Russia - extremely rarely. Saariaho's writings are filled with vivid female characters, and The Passion is no exception. The plot is built around the French religious thinker and philosopher Simone Weil and her tragic life. The name, of course, refers us to the tradition of biography of the last days of Christ. The oratorio consists of 15 parts, called by the author “Stations”, and takes us through the life of a philosopher, representing a kind of “march to Calvary”. In an article about the oratorio, Kaia Saariaho writes that she was fascinated by the work of Simone Weil from her youth: back in 1981, she read her main work, Gravity and Grace, and it had a great influence on her. The libretto was written by Amin Maalouf, a French writer of Lebanese origin, and the stage version of the oratorio was directed by Peter Sellars. Saariaho claims that the work was carried out jointly: they selected various passages from the texts and the biography of Simone Weil. The composer wrote:“I have always been fascinated by Weill's desire for knowledge of the intellectual and religious, Peter was interested in her political activities, and Amin was interested in the discrepancy between her philosophy and personal life; he showed the fate of a fragile person immersed in great ideas. It is symbolic that the premiere of Simonov's Passion took place at the Peter Sellars New Crowned Hope Festival in Vienna, the main goal of which is to highlight the problems of social inequality; it is a task to which Simone Weil devoted her entire life.

Пауль Хиндемит написал Концерт для валторны с оркестром в 1949 году для известного валторниста Денниса Брейна. Первое исполнение состоялось в Баден-Бадене под управлением композитора через год после создания. Это произведение очень необычное. Интересен выбор групп инструментов для оркестра: деревянные духовые, струнные и литавры. Концерт написан в традиционных трех частях, но при детальном рассмотрении обнаруживается, что третья разделена еще на несколько частей! Несмотря на кажущееся обилие номеров, Концерт длится всего 15 минут. Автор оратории Кайя Саариахо – наша современница, композитор-космополит, которая родилась в Финляндии. Сегодня ее произведения звучат во всем мире, но в России – крайне редко. Сочинения Саариахо наполнены яркими женскими образами, и «Страсти» – не исключение. Сюжет построен вокруг французской религиозной мыслительницы и философа Симоны Вайль и ее трагической жизни. Название, безусловно, отсылает нас к традиции жизнеописания последних дней Христа. Оратория состоит из 15 частей, названных автором «Станциями», и проводит нас сквозь жизнь философа, представляя собой своеобразное «шествие на Голгофу». В статье об оратории Кайя Саариахо пишет, что была увлечена творчеством Симоны Вайль с юности: еще в 1981 году она прочитала ее главный труд «Тяжесть и благодать», и он оказал на нее большое влияние. Автором либретто стал Амин Маалуф, французский писатель ливанского происхождения, а режиссером сценической версии оратории – Питер Селларс. Саариахо утверждает, что работа проходила совместно: они выбирали различные отрывки из текстов и биографии Симоны Вайль. Композитор писала: «Меня всегда увлекало стремление Вайль к познанию интеллектуального и религиозного, Питера интересовала ее политическая деятельность, а Амина – несоответствие между ее философией и личной жизнью; он показал судьбу хрупкого человека, погруженного в великие идеи». Символично, что премьера «Страстей Симоновых» состоялась на фестивале Питера Селларса New Crowned Hope Festival в Вене, главная цель которого – осветить проблемы социального неравенства; это задача, которой Симона Вайль посвятила всю жизнь.
