With Ernani the most beautiful early Verdi opera is staged, together with Nabucco and Macbeth, in which the violent pure force of revenge finds its maximum expression of intensity and vibration. The opera was staged for the first time on March 9, 1844 at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice, enjoying great success with the public.

The new production is entrusted in the musical direction to Alvise Casellati, creator and musical director of Opera Italiana is in the Air, who will conduct the Arturo Toscanini Emilia-Romagna Orchestra. In the cast the great voices of the Verdi repertoire recognized internationally, among which the famous American tenor Gregory Kunde stands out, among the most elegant and complete singers on the current opera scene, the soprano Francesca Dotto, the baritone Ernesto Petti and the young Russian bass Evgeny Stavinsky . The staging will be entrusted to the multifaceted director Gianmaria Aliverta, assisted by a team of young artists.

The opera by Giuseppe Verdi is taken from the play of the same name by Victor Hugo. The drama takes place in Spain in 1519 and in Aachen. The bandit Don Giovanni d'Aragona, Ernani, is leading a battle against King Charles, to avenge his murdered father. Ernani goes to the castle of Silva, and falls in love with Elvira, nephew and bride betrothed to his uncle.

The events get complicated when Carlo himself, incognito, goes to the castle to declare his love for Elvira. Ernani reveals to Silva that the king is also in love with the woman. The two make a pact to avenge their offenses: Ernani gives a horn to Silva, when she wants her death, all he has to do is play it. Charles, now appointed king, in the meantime decrees their death. Only Elvira's passionate intervention will save them. Carlo, pitying, cancels the sentence and allows Elvira to marry her beloved Ernani. During a wedding preparatory party, however, the sinister sounds of a horn are heard. It is Silva, mindful of the pact stipulated with Ernani. Ernani, out of respect for her promise and for her honor, kills himself leaving his beloved in complete desperation.
