It was with Faust that Gounod established his worldwide reputation in 1859. Fascinated for more than twenty years by the tragedy of Goethe, the composition of the work was punctuated by a thousand adventures. Created without success at the Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris, the opera in five acts will end up triumphing to never leave the remaining stages, with Carmen , the most performed French opera in the world, a symbol of lyrical renewal.

Gounod is enthusiastic about the character of Marguerite and writes a drama which, while deviating significantly from Goethe, nevertheless offers a homogeneous and effective trajectory driven by a remarkable balance between vocality, harmony and orchestra.

Faust 's music is an invaluable gift. His melodies punctuate the tragic scenes with astonishing accuracy of expression and distill their various emotions in a rare festival of hits including the unforgettable Air des bijoux , the Chœur des soldiers  Immortelle Gloire de nos aïeux , the sublime air of Faust Salut ! A chaste and pure residence and even the Golden Calf or the serenade of Mephistopheles,… enough to satisfy the most demanding music lovers!

C’est avec Faust que Gounod a établi, en 1859, sa notoriété mondiale. Fasciné depuis plus de vingt ans par la tragédie de Goethe, la composition de l’œuvre fut jalonnée de mille péripéties. Créé sans succès au Théâtre-Lyrique à Paris, l’opéra en cinq actes finira par triompher pour ne plus jamais quitter les scènes restant, avec Carmen, l’opéra français le plus joué au monde, symbole du renouveau lyrique.

Gounod s’enthousiasme pour le personnage de Marguerite et écrit un drame qui, en s’écartant sensiblement de Goethe, propose pourtant une trajectoire homogène et efficace mue par un remarquable équilibre entre la vocalité, l’harmonie et l’orchestre.

La musique de Faust est un cadeau inestimable. Ses mélodies rythment les scènes tragiques avec une stupéfiante justesse d’expression et distillent leurs diverses émotions en un rare festival de tubes où figurent, l’inoubliable Air des bijoux, le Chœur des soldats Gloire immortelle de nos aïeux, le sublime air de Faust Salut ! Demeure chaste et pure et encore le Veau d’Or ou la sérénade de Méphistophélès,… de quoi satisfaire les mélomanes les plus exigeants !
