Two strong short operas by PUCCINI will be an ENTIRE EVENING at the Opera

Two strong stories about people who are affected by a crisis, which we both have to suffer with and laugh at. For Sister Angelica, the seemingly peaceful monastic life is broken in a brutal way. In the comedy Gianni Schicchi , which is so much more than Puccini's most famous aria "O mio babbino caro", it is about luring an inheritance on false premises. The main character hopes not to be sentenced to hell, unlike Sister Angelica's tragic fate which, however, ends in a bright and heavenly atonement. Two short operas that are both jewels in Italian realistic opera with Puccini at the height of his ability.

Wilhelm Carlsson has directed a long line of acclaimed theater and opera productions at Dramaten, the Royal Opera and Wermland Opera, among others. He regularly collaborates with his artistic team Marcus Olson (scenography and costume) and Markus Granqvist (lighting design), who this time takes on Puccini's two beloved one-act operas. The set is anchored in 17th and 13th century Italy, at the same time as it moves freely in time. But so are widely differing themes such as the longing for love and inheritance disputes eternally relevant for better or worse.
