"Jeanne d'Arc" Lyrical drama by Giuseppe Verdi. The dramatic life story of Joan of Arc has inspired artists to create beautiful masterpieces for centuries. The music for the opera was created in just four months and shows us the ambition of the young Verdi and his desire to find new means of expression. The result is colorful orchestration, uplifting choruses and dizzying arias. It was his fifth opera premiered at Teatro alla Scala, which was received by the audience with a standing ovation. The heroine of the opera is a mixture of historical truth and romantic fantasy, exemplified by the character's poeticized death on the battlefield rather than by fire and her love for King Charles VII.

The dramatic life story of Joan of Arc has inspired countless artists over the centuries. Composed in barely four months, the score of “Giovanna d’Arco” gives us an insight into an ambitious Giuseppe Verdi who is looking to experiment and innovate, achieving colourful orchestration, rousing choruses and daring vocal writing. This is his fifth opera at Teatro alla Scala, following the two big success of “Nabucco” and “I Lombardi”. It was ecstatically received by audiences. The historical character is presented to us as a combination of historic precision mixed with significant elements of poetic license, the most notorious of which is that his heroine dies on the battle field instead of being burned at the stake as happened in reality. The love of King Charles for her is the other important original trait of the operatic story.

Jeanne d’Arci dramaatiline elulugu on sajandeid pakkunud kunstnikele inspiratsiooni luua kauneid meistriteoseid. Ooperi muusika sündis vaid nelja kuuga ning näitab meile noore Verdi ambitsioonikust ja soovi leida uusi väljendusvahendeid. Tulemuseks on värvikas orkestratsioon, ülendavad koorid ja peadpööritavad aariad. See oli tema viies Teatro alla Scalas esietendunud ooper, mille publik ovatsioonide saatel vastu võttis. Ooperi kangelanna on segu ajaloolisest tõest ja romantilisest fantaasiast, mille näiteks on tegelase poetiseeritud surm lahinguväljal, mitte hukkumine tuleriidal ning tema armastus kuningas Charles VII vastu.
