With more than 50 years of experience as a film director, Peter Greenaway (Nightwatching, Eisenstein in Guanajuato) combines the advantages of the film and opera worlds at the Verdi Festival in Parma. His completely new approach to Giuseppe Verdi's "Giovanna d'Arco" unfolds a unique magic that touches the audience directly.

The libretto of the opera is based on Friedrich Schiller's play "The Maid of Orleans". It tells the story of the French national heroine, Joan of Arc, who fought to defend her country against English troops during the Hundred Years' War. Constantly torn between her humble roots, her love for King Charles VII, and her heavenly duty to fight for France, she achieves eternal glory by dying in a final, victorious battle against England.
Earthly passion and supernatural purity are brought to life in the musical interpretation of the Virtuosi Italiani and the Coro del Teatro Regio di Parma conducted by Ramón Tebar and by three extraordinary personalities, the singers Vittoria Yeo, Luciano Ganci and Vittorio Vitelli.

Greenaway integrates the auditorium into the action on stage and uses the unique architecture of the Teatro Farnese, one of the oldest and most traditional theaters in Italy. With the help of spectacular video and light installations and his elaborate visual language, he creates a completely new opera.
