“My music is terrible, it is a whirlpool full of horror and greatness!” - Wagner said about the main creation of his life, the gigantic opera saga Der Ring des Nibelungen. These words especially accurately characterize the last opera of the cycle - "The Death of the Gods". From her, or rather from her text, Wagner began work on The Ring; then his drama was called The Death of Siegfried. Both titles warn: there will be no happy ending, Nibelheim will defeat Valhalla. In the "Death of the Gods" hatred, envy, deceit, jealousy, aggression reign, here they manipulate, betray and kill with a stab in the back. Prophetic norns spin the thread of inevitable fate, and the forces of darkness weave intrigues against the forces of light. Music, as always with Wagner, serves the drama; moreover, the drama is primarily concentrated in it, which is why the shock from the "Death of the Gods" is guaranteed even in the absence of a stage incarnation. There are a lot of dark tones in the orchestration: low brass, brass with mutes. Wagner is harsh with his listeners, but still not merciless: there are many very bright pages in the score. The symphonic painting "Siegfried's Journey along the Rhine" was painted with fresh, cheerful colors. At the opposite pole - "Funeral March for the Death of Siegfried", the tragic culmination of the entire Wagnerian epic. Both the symphonic episodes and the score as a whole are permeated with leitmotifs – capacious musical emblems with which the composer-reformer consistently supplied heroes, families, objects, natural phenomena, mental states and even philosophical categories. There are only a dozen new leitmotifs in The Death of the Gods, the rest - about a hundred - are already well known to those who have not missed the previous parts of the quadriptych.

At the very end of The Death of the Gods, a melody sounds, which is commonly called the leitmotif of love-redemption. Wagner had used this theme only once before, in Valkyrie, when the completely desperate Sieglinde was foretold the birth of the hero-savior, Siegfried. At the end of the story, Siegfried dies, Valhalla burns, and "from the ruins of the collapsed palace, men and women, deeply shocked, look at the blazing heavenly fire." And then the brilliant playwright Wagner says his last word: the orchestra very quietly plays gentle major music, full of love, consolation and hope. Humanity continues to live.

The stage history of the Ring of the Nibelungen began in August 1876 in the German city of Bayreuth, where a special festival theater was built to implement Wagner's ambitious ideas. But even there, Wagnerian productions lacked space: instead of the majestic bridge to Valhalla, the audience saw a painted wooden rainbow, and the singers struggled to overcome the stereotypes of their profession. A visionary artist, Wagner was composing "a work of art of the future" for an imaginary stage of the future, with much more possibilities than the theater of the 19th century. At the beginning of the 21st century, the monumental tetralogy was staged at the Mariinsky Theater with a scope and skill that fully met the aspirations of its author.

The German composer-playwright denied the "operatic" nature of his creations, insisting on their "synthetic" nature. Still Wagner go first listen. In the crew of the Mariinsky Ring, just as at the Bayreuth premiere, the conductor-producer occupies a central position. The co-author of the concept of Valery Gergiev was the artist Georgy Tsypin, the costumes were designed by Tatyana Noginova. The authors of the performance have found a solution thanks to which their "Ring" will never lose its artistic power. They took the Wagner saga beyond the limits of specific historical time and space, into the realm of symbols and codes. The path taken by the directors is unique: in the Mariinsky "Ring" there are neither people in skins, nor people with briefcases. Tetralogy appears here as a universal myth that has incorporated elements of various cultures and cults, including Egyptian and Ossetian ones. The fundamental visual image of all four performances is the giants invented by Georgy Tsypin, “demigods, mythical giants are silent witnesses of everything that happens. They live in some other time space. It takes a thousand years for one of them to turn its head” (from an interview with the artist).

Once upon a time, Wagner intended to unleash the entire purifying power of the Ring of the Nibelungen on the audience for a single performance, after which the stage built on the banks of the Rhine was supposed to be dismantled and the score burned. Things did not reach such radicalism, but The Ring forever remained a work with a special, uncommon status. His rare (usually once a season) appearance on the Mariinsky playbill is akin to a Wagner festival, all participants of which rise above everyday life for four days and are involved in the cycle of events on a cosmic scale. Эти слова особенно точно характеризуют последнюю оперу цикла – «Гибель богов». С нее, вернее – с ее текста, Вагнер начинал работу над «Кольцом»; тогда его драма называлась «Смерть Зигфрида». Оба названия предупреждают: хеппи-энда не будет, Нибельхейм победит Валгаллу. В «Гибели богов» царят ненависть, зависть, обман, ревность, агрессия, здесь манипулируют, предают и убивают ударом в спину. Вещие норны прядут нить неотвратимой судьбы, а силы тьмы плетут интриги против сил света. Музыка, как всегда у Вагнера, служит драме; более того, в ней драма прежде всего и сосредоточена, именно поэтому потрясение от «Гибели богов» гарантировано даже в отсутствие сценического воплощения. В оркестровке много темных тонов: низкие духовые, медные с сурдинами. Вагнер суров со своими слушателями, но все же не беспощаден: в партитуре немало и очень светлых страниц. Свежими, жизнерадостными красками написана симфоническая картина «Путешествие Зигфрида по Рейну». На противоположном полюсе – «Траурный марш на смерть Зигфрида», трагическая кульминация всего вагнеровского эпоса. И симфонические эпизоды, и партитура в целом пронизаны лейтмотивами – емкими музыкальными эмблемами, которыми композитор-реформатор последовательно снабдил героев, семьи, предметы, явления природы, психические состояния и даже философские категории. Новых лейтмотивов в «Гибели богов» всего с десяток, остальные – около сотни – уже хорошо известны тем, кто не пропустил предыдущие части квадриптиха. Из-за обилия знакомого материала некоторые критики рискуют называть «Гибель богов» оперой-попурри, однако надо отдать должное бездонной фантазии Вагнера: в умении переосмысливать и варьировать свои музыкальные идеи ему нет равных.

В самом конце «Гибели богов» звучит мелодия, которую принято называть лейтмотивом любви-искупления. Прежде Вагнер использовал эту тему лишь единожды, в «Валькирии», когда совершенно отчаявшейся Зиглинде было предречено рождение героя-спасителя, Зигфрида. В финале истории Зигфрид погибает, Валгалла горит, а «из развалин обрушившегося дворца мужчины и женщины, глубоко потрясенные, смотрят на разгорающийся небесный пожар». И тогда гениальный драматург Вагнер произносит свое последнее слово: оркестр очень тихо играет нежную мажорную музыку, полную любви, утешения и надежды. Человечество продолжает жить.

В бригаде мариинского «Кольца», так же как на байройтской премьере, центральное положение занимает дирижер-постановщик. Соавтором концепции Валерия Гергиева выступил художник Георгий Цыпин, костюмы придумала Татьяна Ногинова. Авторы спектакля нашли решение, благодаря которому их «Кольцо» никогда не утратит своей художественной силы. Вагнеровская сага выведена ими за пределы конкретного исторического времени и пространства, в область символов и кодов. Путь, по которому пошли постановщики, уникален: в мариинском «Кольце» нет ни людей в шкурах, ни людей с портфелями. Тетралогия предстает здесь как универсальный миф, вобравший в себя элементы самых разных культур и культов, вплоть до египетских и осетинских. Основополагающий визуальный образ всех четырех спектаклей – придуманные Георгием Цыпиным исполины, «полубоги, мифические великаны – молчаливые свидетели всего происходящего. Они живут в каком-то другом временнóм пространстве. Чтобы одному из них повернуть голову, нужна тысяча лет» (из интервью художника).

Когда-то Вагнер намеревался обрушить на зрителей всю очистительную мощь «Кольца нибелунга» за одно-единственное исполнение, после чего построенные на берегу Рейна подмостки предполагалось разобрать, а партитуру – сжечь. До такого радикализма дело не дошло, но «Кольцо» навсегда осталось сочинением с особым, незаурядным статусом. Его редкое (как правило, раз в сезон) появление на мариинской афише сродни вагнеровскому фестивалю, все участники которого на четыре дня поднимаются над буднями и вовлекаются в круговорот событий космического масштаба.
