The Missa pro defunctis de Guerrero occupies a place of honor next to the requiems of Morales and Victoria. Francisco Guerrero (1528-1599) was a Sevillian priest and musician who, together with Cristóbal de Morales and Tomás Luis de Victoria, shaped the great triad of Spanish Renaissance polyphony. His musical production is not limited to sacred music, but he also tasted the honeys of the profane. Among his works, the Missa pro defunctis(1582) occupies a place of honor next to the requiems of his colleagues Morales and Victoria. Written for four voices, it is one of the great polyphonic compositions of the Hispanic Renaissance and was later recognized by musicologists such as Felip Pedrell in their historical-musical research. The work obeys the aesthetic fascination with death in 16th century Castile, under the watchful eye of the counter-reformist Council of Trent, which cursed for a return to Gregorian chant and flat singing, despite tolerating vocal polyphony without instrumental accompaniment.

La Missa pro defunctis de Guerrero ocupa un lloc d’honor al costat dels rèquiems de Morales i Victoria.Francisco Guerrero (1528-1599) va ser un sacerdot i músic sevillà que, juntament amb Cristóbal de Morales i Tomás Luis de Victoria, configura la gran tríada del polifonisme renaixentista espanyol. La seva producció musical no es redueix tan sols a la música sacra, sinó que també va tastar les mels de la profana. D’entre les seves obres, la Missa pro defunctis (1582) ocupa un lloc d’honor al costat dels rèquiems dels seus col·legues Morales i Victoria. Escrita per a quatre veus, és una de les grans composicions polifòniques del Renaixement hispànic i va ser reconeguda posteriorment per musicòlegs com Felip Pedrell en les seves recerques historicomusicals. L’obra obeeix a la fascinació estètica per la mort a la Castella del segle XVI, sota la mirada atenta del contrareformista Concili de Trento, que maldava per un retorn al gregorià i al cant pla, tot i tolerar la polifonia vocal sense acompanyament instrumental.
