Handel Versus Bononcini: Concert Various

"Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dee!" –  This quote from a poem published in a London newspaper in 1725 takes aim at the rivalry between opera composers G. Bononcini and GF Handel. When Bononcini, 15 years Handel's senior, came to England in 1720 after years of traveling to Rome via Venice and Vienna, Handel's Royal Academy of Music, London's premier opera company, which gave us Giulio Cesare, Ottone and Rodelinda, had already gotten off to a great start in 1719.

This program is inspired by a well-known anecdote that took place on June 6, 1727, on the occasion of a replica of Bononcini's opera “Astianatte” where the two rival primadonnas Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni sang. The partisans of one and the other present at this performance were interested neither in the work nor in the composer, but only in making their favorite prevail. In the presence of Princess Carolina of Wales, Faustina Bordoni began to sing and the “Cuzzonian” “faction” wasted no time in booing and mocking her great rival. The fight was inevitable. The singers were seized with a rather violent fit of hysteria which culminated in a series of slaps, hair pulling and unspeakable insults and the performance had to be interrupted. 

Despite this, Bononcini knew how to seduce his London audience with his Italian operas. Lyrical highlights on the themes of love and jealousy, triumph and revenge, savage despair and tender devotion are on the program.

« Tweedle-dum et Tweedle-dee! » – Cette citation d’une poésie publiée dans un journal londonien en 1725 vise la rivalité entre les compositeurs d’opéra G. Bononcini et G. F. Haendel. Lorsque Bononcini, 15 ans l’aîné de Haendel, vint en Angleterre en 1720 après des années de voyage à Rome via Venise et Vienne, la Royal Academy of Music de Haendel, la première compagnie d’opéra londonienne, qui nous donna Giulio Cesare, Ottone et Rodelinda, avait déjà décollé à un excellent départ en 1719.

Ce programme s’inspire d’une anecdote très connue qui eut lieu le 6 juin 1727, à l’occasion d’une réplique de l’opéra « Astianatte » de Bononcini où les deux primadonnas rivales Francesca Cuzzoni et Faustina Bordoni chantaient. Les partisans de l’une et de l’autre présents à cette représentation ne s’intéressaient ni à l’œuvre ni au compositeur mais seulement à faire prévaloir leur favori. En présence de la princesse Carolina de Galles, Faustina Bordoni se mit à chanter et la « faction » « cuzzonienne » ne tarda pas à huer et à se moquer de sa grande rivale. La bagarre fut inévitable. Les chanteuses furent saisies d’une crise d’hystérie assez violente qui culmina en une série de gifles, d’arrachage de cheveux et d’insultes indicibles et la représentation dut être interrompue. 

Malgré cela, Bononcini sut comment séduire son public londonien avec ses opéras italiens. Des temps forts lyriques sur le thème de l’amour et de la jalousie, du triomphe et de la vengeance, du désespoir sauvage et de la tendre dévotion sont au programme.
