Humperdinck celebrated a success with his first opera that he never achieved again with any of his subsequent works. Just one year after its premiere in 1893, almost 50 stages had the work on their program. To this day, the setting of Grimm's fairy tale classic is one of the most popular operas in the world. For generations of children, parents and grandparents, HÄNSEL UND GRETEL was and is the first common opera experience. The siblings' struggle against poverty and hunger and their victory over the wicked witch keep touching people anew and pieces such as “Brother, come dance with me” or the “evening blessing” are now practically part of folk songs.
