Sketch with music by Paul Hindemith With the NRW Opera Studio A married drama in twelve minutes - with “There and Back” Paul Hindemith wrote one of the shortest operas of all time. The best thing about it: From the middle of the piece, the action - like the music - runs exactly backwards and ends at the starting point. And of course the plot is told quickly: a man intercepts a lover's letter to his wife and unceremoniously murders her. He then kills himself out of remorse for the act. Suddenly a mysterious voice sounds: time is nothing in the face of eternity, there is no difference between before and after. And suddenly everything starts all over again ... Created in the experimental 1920s, Hindemith's opera sketch has retained its freshness to this day. Hindemith and his lyricist Marcellus Schiffer want nothing to do with the large-scale opera form of the late Romantic style. Texts suitable for everyday use and jazzy sprinkles underline the tongue-in-cheek narrated story, which unceremoniously undermines the traditional linear course of action. Director Tanyel Bakir looks at the turbulent events through Freud's glasses and discovers completely new depth psychological layers that find their visual correspondence in Julieth Villada's videography.
