psalms? Symphony? Yes, what now? Igor Stravinsky once again goes his own way. A conductor orders something festive for an anniversary, the publisher wants something popular. That literally calls for biblical texts. In three psalms we walk together with the citizens' choir on a path from plaintive misery to angelic jubilation. So from the depths in the direction of heavenly spheres - and that completely without high strings. Of course, the stomping rhythms so typical of Stravinsky are still included.

Gustav Mahler mixes dangerous emotional cocktails. You're addicted after the first sip - and yet you often don't know what Mahler is all about. If you think you're hearing a naive little children's song: Two bars later, it's tearing you down into the deepest abyss. As soon as you prepare yourself for brusque resignation, this man comes around the corner with the next cheerful melody, as if nothing had happened. But this emotional roller coaster ride also finds its way to paradise. One that soprano Siobhan Stagg sells us as a land of milk and honey: »The little angels, they bake the bread.«

Psalmen? Sinfonie? Ja, was denn nun? Igor Strawinsky geht mal wieder seine ganz eigenen Wege. Ein Dirigent bestellt etwas Festliches für ein Jubiläum, der Verleger wünscht sich etwas Populäres. Das schreit ja förmlich nach biblischen Texten. In drei Psalmen beschreiten wir gemeinsam mit dem Bürgerchor einen Weg von klagendem Elend hin zu engelsgleichem Jubel. Aus den Tiefen in Richtung himmlische Sphären also – und das komplett ohne hohe Streicher. Die für Strawinsky so typischen stampfenden Rhythmen gibt es natürlich trotzdem inklusive.

Gustav Mahler mixt gefährliche emotionale Cocktails. Süchtig ist man bereits nach dem ersten Schluck – und weiß doch oft nicht, woran man bei Mahler ist. Glaubt man, ein naives Kinderliedchen herauszuhören: Schon reißt es einen zwei Takte später in den tiefsten Abgrund. Kaum stellt man sich auf schroffe Resignation ein, schon kommt dieser Mann mit der nächsten heiteren Melodie um die Ecke, als wär’ nix gewesen. Aber auch diese Gefühlsachterbahnfahrt findet ihren Weg ins Paradies. Eines, das uns von Sopranistin Siobhan Stagg als Schlaraffenland verkauft wird: »Die Englein, die backen das Brot.«
