On September 6, 2020, one of the greatest French voices disappeared. After an exceptional career, soprano Christiane Eda-Pierreundoubtedly deserved much more tributes (which health circumstances certainly prevented). The most vibrant has just been given by the association Les Contres Courants and the Voix des Outre-mer committee, which organized an exemplary concert, this Saturday, July 3, 2021. Initially planned for Salle Gaveau, it took place at the National Opera of Paris (Amphitheatre of the Opéra Bastille). The great national institution took the opportunity to honor the memory of one of its finest representatives. Indeed, before being the undisputed star of the Palais Garnier or the Met, Mademoiselle Eda-Pierre was part of the troupe of the Réunion des Théâtres Lyriques Nationaux which then brought together the Paris Opera and the Opéra Comique. Throughout the evening, the life and career of the artist were detailed byRichard Martet , storyteller of great talent who punctuated his erudite narration with some fascinating anecdotes. The editor-in-chief of Opera Magazine recalled the soprano's own words which stressed that you had to work twice as hard to succeed when you were black. Les Voix des Outre-mer have succeeded in what seemed inconceivable at the time of the singer, bringing together on stage six absolutely magnificent artists. While some singers are still students at the conservatory, they performed alongside their confirmed godfathers and godmothers with remarkable homogeneity. The evening was punctuated by many surprises.

The exceptional participations of Patrizia Ciofi and the mezzo-soprano Karine Deshayes caused a sensation, the soprano opening the concert with the aria of Leïla “Comme formerly…” ( The pearl fishermen of Bizet) admirably sung. The mezzo, godmother of the Voix des Outre-mer competition, interpreted for the first time in France the aria of the Countess of Nozze di Figaroby Mozart, “E Susanna non vien…”. A few privileged people had already experienced this pure moment of grace in Saint-Pierre in Martinique, during the Filao Festival which could have been held in December 2020. To date, he was the first and only one to dedicate all of his events in memory of Christiane Eda-Pierre. The great Mozartian would have appreciated the performances of Axelle Saint-Cirel and Aslam Safla . As he prepares to make his stage debut in Così fan tutte , the winner of the second edition of the Voix des Outre-mer competition preferred the air of Figaro to highlight his beautiful means. The fruity timbre of the young mezzo perfectly suits the role of Sesto, the feverish hero of La clemenza di Titobrilliantly embodied. In a magnificent duet of the flowers of Lakmé , Axelle Saint-Cirel gave the reply to Clara Bellon . The soprano generously displayed her easy high notes in the formidable air of the doll from Les Contes d'Hoffmann , under the benevolent gaze of Annick Massis present in the room.

 The path traveled by these young artists is impressive, like that of Candice Albardier , young talent Voix des Outre-mer 2020 who confirms all the hopes placed in her. Already well advanced in a most promising career, the impressive Marie-Laure Garnier , the very first winner of the competition and recent Revelation of the Victoires de la Musique dazzled the spectators of the Amphithéâtre-Bastille by interpreting the air of Vitellia, " Non più di fiori” ( La clemenza di Tito ). The artists were able to count on an exceptional partner. Always listening, pianist Jeff Cohenwas more than an accompanist, a real friend in osmosis with the vocal stage, jumping gracefully from one repertoire to another. Mozart, Offenbach, Delibes were the familiar composers of Christiane Eda-Pierre who, as a pioneer, also approached Baroque music. To evoke this often misunderstood part, Edwin Fardini , the 2021 winner, brought his superb by singing Rameau (“Dreadful monster” extracted from Dardanus ) with aplomb and a very appreciable diction. Handel was also on the program with Alcina and the air of the magician interpreted by the countertenor Fabrice di Falco. Very handsome in an elegant jacket-dress, the president of Voix des Outre-mer cultivates the androgyny of his voice in a surprising and very successful “Ah! Miocor”. At the end of the concert, the artist brought an additional touch of emotion by evoking some personal memories of Christiane Eda-Pierre.

While the era calls for diversity, it seems relevant to wonder about the absence of an exhibition dedicated to the only ultramarine diva at the Paris Opera, in her house. By browsing the program for the 2021-2022 season of the first stage where French singers are underrepresented, it is certainly appropriate to ask the authorities, what are you waiting for to recognize and highlight your talents? They are close at hand, as this exceptional tribute concert on July 3 proves.

Le 6 septembre 2020 disparaissait l’une des plus grandes voix françaises. Après une carrière exceptionnelle, la soprano Christiane Eda-Pierre méritait sans aucun doute des hommages bien plus nombreux (que les circonstances sanitaires ont certainement empêchés). Le plus vibrant vient d’être rendu par l’association Les Contres Courants et le comité Voix des Outre-mer qui ont organisé un concert exemplaire, ce samedi 3 juillet 2021. Prévu initialement Salle Gaveau, il a eu lieu à l’Opéra national de Paris (Amphithéâtre de l’Opéra Bastille). La grande institution nationale s’est saisie de l’occasion pour honorer la mémoire de l’une de ses plus belles représentantes. En effet, avant d’être la star incontestée du Palais Garnier ou du Met, mademoiselle Eda-Pierre a fait partie de la troupe de la Réunion des Théâtres Lyriques Nationaux qui réunissait alors l’Opéra de Paris et l’Opéra Comique. Tout au long de la soirée, la vie et la carrière de l’artiste ont été détaillées par Richard Martet, conteur de grand talent qui a ponctué sa narration érudite par quelques anecdotes passionnantes. Le rédacteur en chef d’Opéra Magazine a rappelé les propres mots de la soprano qui soulignait qu’il fallait travailler deux fois plus pour réussir lorsqu’on était noire. Les Voix des Outre-mer ont réussi ce qui semblait inconcevable à l’époque de la cantatrice, réunir sur scène six artistes absolument magnifiques. Alors que certains chanteurs sont encore étudiants au conservatoire, ils se sont produits aux côtés de leurs parrains et marraines confirmés dans une homogénéité remarquable. La soirée a été ponctuée par de nombreuses surprises.

La mezzo, marraine du concours Voix des Outre-mer, a interprété pour la première fois dans l’hexagone l’air de la Comtesse des Nozze di Figaro de Mozart, « E Susanna non vien… ». Quelques rares privilégiés avaient déjà vécu ce pur moment de grâce à Saint-Pierre en Martinique, lors du Festival Filao qui avait pu se tenir en décembre 2020. A ce jour, il a été le premier et le seul à dédicacer l’ensemble de ses événements à la mémoire de Christiane Eda-Pierre. La grande mozartienne aurait apprécié les prestations d’Axelle Saint-Cirel et d’Aslam Safla. Alors qu’il s’apprête à faire ses débuts sur scène dans Così fan tutte, le lauréat de la deuxième édition du concours Voix des Outre-mer a préféré l’air de Figaro pour mettre en avant ses beaux moyens. Le timbre fruité de la jeune mezzo sied parfaitement au rôle de Sesto, héros fiévreux de La clemenza di Tito brillamment incarné. Dans un magnifique duo des fleurs de Lakmé, Axelle Saint-Cirel a donné la réplique à Clara Bellon. La soprano a généreusement affiché ses aigus faciles dans le redoutable air de la poupée des Contes d’Hoffmann, sous le regard bienveillant d’Annick Massis présente dans la salle. 

Talents d’hier et d’aujourd’hui

 Le chemin parcouru par ces jeunes artistes est impressionnant comme celui de Candice Albardier, jeune talent Voix des Outre-mer 2020 qui confirme tous les espoirs placés en elle. Déjà bien avancée dans une carrière des plus prometteuses, l’impressionnante Marie-Laure Garnier, toute première lauréate du concours et récente Révélation des Victoires de la Musique a ébloui les spectateurs de l’Amphithéâtre-Bastille en interprétant l’air de Vitellia, «Non più di fiori » (La clemenza di Tito). Les artistes ont pu compter sur un exceptionnel partenaire. Toujours à l’écoute, le pianiste Jeff Cohen a été plus qu’un accompagnateur, un véritable ami en osmose avec le plateau vocal sautant avec grâce d’un répertoire à l’autre. Mozart, Offenbach, Delibes étaient les compositeurs familiers de Christiane Eda-Pierre qui, en pionnière, a également abordé la musique baroque. Pour évoquer ce pan souvent méconnu, Edwin Fardini, le lauréat 2021, a apporté sa superbe en chantant Rameau (« Monstre affreux » extrait de Dardanus) avec aplomb et une diction très appréciable. Haendel était également au programme avec Alcina et l’air de la magicienne interprété par le contre-ténor Fabrice di Falco. Très en beauté dans une élégante veste-robe, le président des Voix des Outre-mer cultive l’androgynie de sa voix dans un surprenant et très réussi « Ah ! Mio cor ». A la fin du concert, l’artiste a apporté une touche d’émotion supplémentaire en évoquant quelques souvenirs personnels de Christiane Eda-Pierre. 

Alors que l’époque réclame la diversité, il semble pertinent de s’interroger sur l’absence d’une exposition consacré à la seule diva ultramarine à l’Opéra national de Paris, dans sa maison. En parcourant le programme de la saison 2021-2022 de la première scène où les chanteurs français sont sous-représentés, il convient assurément de demander aux autorités, qu’attendez-vous pour reconnaître et mettre en avant vos talents ? Ils sont à portée de main comme le prouve cet exceptionnel concert hommage du 3 juillet.
