In the Days of the Chancellor

Tryggve Andersen's novel is a cultural-historical depiction from Ringsaker from the end of the 18th century until around 1814.
Cancelliraad Weydahl with his many good but also dubious sides, appears as a towering figure. The rest of the gallery of people are civil servants, large farmers, small farmers, merchants, homemakers, servants and others with connections to life and business in the countryside in those days.
The time around 1800 was no further back than that much material from the dramatic times associated with the Napoleonic Wars, the campaign in 1807 and the years of distress, or the "bark bread era" as it was also called, still lived in stories and legends.
The course of action and depictions in the opera have their basis in the book, although the stories can sometimes take their own paths!
