The Bloody Monday of Easter 1282: the call to Vespers launches the uprising of the Sicilians against the French invader. Verdi’s renown heaving reached the whole of Europe, the Opéra de Paris commissioned him to write his first opera in French for the Universal Exhibition in 1855. It will be Sicilian Vespers, a historical drama full of dramatic incident in which he makes some bold experiments. After Moses and Pharaoh and The Prophet, the Festival, together with Daniele Rustioni and the artists of the Opéra de Lyon, continues
its exploration of grand opera. And to take some of the most taxing roles in the whole of Verdi’s music, it’s reuniting a cast of the highest international standing, and capable of making the most out of the French version and language. The flamboyant Marina Rebeka returns in the superb role of Helen; on the strength of his recent successes in Aix, John Osborn tackles the terrifying tessitura of Henry; with their polished style and limpid French, Igor Golovatenko and Roberto Tagliavini provide the bass-clef underpinnings.

Sanglant lundi de Pâques 1282 : l’appel des vêpres lance le soulèvement des Siciliens contre l’envahisseur français. La renommée de Verdi s’étant désormais étendue à toute l’Europe, l’Opéra de Paris lui commande pour l’Exposition Universelle de 1855 son premier ouvrage original en français. Ce sera Les Vêpres siciliennes, drame historique foisonnant de coups de théâtre, dans lequel il expérimente audacieusement. Après Moïse et Pharaon et Le Prophète, le Festival poursuit, en compagnie de Daniele Rustioni et des forces de l’Opéra de Lyon, son exploration du grand opéra. Et pour tenir certaines des parties les plus exigeantes de tout le répertoire verdien, il réunit une distribution au plus haut niveau international, capable de servir au mieux la version et la langue françaises. La flamboyante Marina Rebeka fait son retour dans le rôle superbe d’Hélène ; fort de ses récents succès aixois, John Osborn s’attaque à la tessiture meurtrière d’Henri ; style châtié et français limpide, Igor Golovatenko et Roberto Tagliavini sont leurs dignes « clefs de fa ».
