The Barber of Seville« in 1815, the only 23-year-old Gioacchino Rossini created a witty, sparkling fiery and pulsating masterpiece full of catchy tunes within just three weeks. He was inspired by the play »La Précaution inutile ou le Barbier de Séville« by the French poet, secret agent and arms smuggler Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais from 1772, which deals with the prehistory of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's »Le nozze di Figaro«. In the spirit of the Italian opera buffa, »The Barber of Seville« tells the story of the love-drunk Count Almaviva, who advertises in various disguises for his imprisoned beloved. And as is so often the case, his rival, the snarled old man, is at a disadvantage.
A white wall becomes the starting material of the
production. With hand-drawn illustrations, stage designer Ernesto Lucas brings the hustle and bustle of Seville to life through large-format projections. Alternating between ink drawing and watercolor, his pictorial world blurs the boundaries between reality and fantasy. Inspired by characters from Carlo Goldoni's comedies, director Maren Schäfer places Rosina at the centre of her interpretation, who frees herself from her captivity and takes her own life into her own hands. Rossini's humorous music, brilliant solo parts, rousing melodies and fast-paced ensembles come into their own: the performance of the Nationaltheater Mannheim shines with liveliness and youthful cheerfulness.
