In 1777, the premiere of Joseph Haydn's last opera buffa "Il mondo della luna" took place on the occasion of the princely wedding celebrations at Eszterháza Palace. Haydn's opera, brimming with musical ideas, based on a comedy by Carlo Goldoni, is a wacky, ludicrous expedition into the endless expanses of the imagination. The landing on the moon is of course for the ?? as its name clearly indicates ?? "gullible" Bonafede only staged: In order to approach Bonafede's daughters, whom Bonafede guards like the apple of his eye, the imposter Ecclitico and his friend Ernesto give him a sleeping potion. With the help of the daughters who are in on the intrigue, he is led to believe that he is in a lunar paradise. In the end, transformed by his experiences on the moon, Bonafede tries to bring the couples together himself.
