Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in patria is the composer's second opera after Orfeo, the favola in musica considered to be the first ever opera. With Ulisse, we leave the fable behind for myth: the myth of the end of Ulysses' voyage and his return to his faithful wife. Here, gods mingle with men and tragedy alternates with tender emotion and comedy. The libretto contains an infinite variety of themes that are at once timeless and profoundly human: Musically, the madrigal's heritage is evident in the richness of the ensemble pieces, but more elaborate forms are already appearing, especially in the handling of the recitar cantando and the orchestral ritornellos with their sublime sensuality and polychromy. To do justice to the dramatic and expressive variety, to this perfect fusion of music and theatre, the work requires voices that are well versed in this repertoire, and there is no doubt that the team assembled here knows its "job" in this area.

Le retour d’Ulysse dans sa patrie est le second opéra du compositeur après la favola in musica qu’est son Orfeo fondateur. Avec Ulysse, nous quittons la fable pour aborder les rives du mythe, celui de la fin du voyage d’Ulysse et son retour auprès de sa fidèle épouse. Ici, les dieux et les hommes s’entremêlent, le tragique, l’émotion tendre et le comique alternent. Le livret offre en effet une infinité de thèmes à la fois intemporels et profondément humains. Musicalement, si l’héritage du madrigal s’affirme dans la richesse des ensembles, apparaissent déjà des formes plus élaborées, en particulier dans le traitement du recitar cantando et des ritournelles orchestrales, sublimes de sensualité et de polychromie. Pour rendre justice à la richesse dramatique et expressive, à cette parfaite fusion entre musique et théâtre, l’ouvrage requiert des voix rompues à ce répertoire et nul doute que l’équipe réunie ici connait son « métier » en la matière.
