The noble Leonora fell in love with the unknown knight Manrico, but lost sight of him after the outbreak of civil war. When Count Luna appears to confess his love to Leonora, the song of the troubadour Manrico holds him back. Count Luna is obsessed with Leonora. He wants her at all costs, even if she doesn't return his love. He realizes that Manrico is not only his rival in love, but also his opponent in war: a fight ensues. Leonora thinks Manrico is dead and goes to the monastery. From there, however, she is kidnapped by him. Out of hatred for Manrico, Luna condemns his foster mother Azucena to death by fire. Manrico is also caught trying to save Azucena. In order to save the life of her condemned lover, Leonora offers herself to Count Luna in exchange for Manrico's release. Blind love and mad hatred are the monsters that darken the world in Verdi's “Troubadour”. Die adelige Leonora hat sich in den unbekannten Ritter Manrico verliebt, ihn aber nach Ausbruch des Bürgerkriegs aus den Augen verloren. Als Graf Luna erscheint, um Leonora seine Liebe zu gestehen, hält ihn der Gesang des Troubadours Manrico zurück. Graf Luna ist von Leonora besessen. Er will sie um jeden Preis, auch wenn sie seine Liebe nicht erwidert. Er erkennt, dass Manrico nicht nur sein Rivale in der Liebe ist, sondern auch noch sein Gegner im Krieg: Es kommt zum Kampf. Leonora hält Manrico für tot und geht ins Kloster. Von dort wird sie jedoch von ihm entführt. Aus Hass auf Manrico verurteilt Luna dessen Ziehmutter Azucena zum Feuertod. Manrico wird bei dem Versuch, Azucena zu retten, ebenfalls gefangen. Um das Leben ihres verurteilten Geliebten zu retten, bietet sich Leonora dem Grafen Luna im Tausch für Manricos Freilassung an. Blinde Liebe und rasender Hass sind die Monster, die in Verdis „Troubadour“ die Welt verfinstern.
