Il turco in Italia

The demanding Milanese spectators made the amalgam between Il Turco in Italia and L'Italiana in Algeri . Furious, they cried foul and denounced a potpourri. The scandal was resounding. And yet, both the score and the plot were completely new. Once the excitement dissipated, the work finally found success. It was celebrated as a masterpiece.

Les exigeants spectateurs milanais firent l’amalgame entre Il Turco in Italia et L’Italiana in Algeri. Furieux, ils crièrent à l’imposture et dénoncèrent un pot-pourri. Le scandale fut retentissant. Et pourtant, la partition comme l’intrigue étaient entièrement neuves. Une fois l’émoi dissipé, l’œuvre trouva enfin le succès. Elle fut célébrée comme un chef-d’œuvre.
