"Iolanta" is a lyrical one-act opera by P. I. Tchaikovsky to the libretto by M. I. Tchaikovsky based on the drama "King René's Daughter" by Henrik Hertz. The opera takes place in the 15th century in the mountains of southern France.

This is Tchaikovsky's last opera. In 1884, the composer read the translation of the one-act drama in verse by the Danish writer Henrik Hertz (1798-1870) King René's Daughter (1845) and was captivated by the originality and poeticity of the plot. The composer's attention was diverted by work on other works, and only in 1891 did he begin composing Iolanta. The composer's brother M. I. Tchaikovsky (1850-1916) was commissioned to have a libretto based on the drama by Hertz in the alteration of V. Zotov (in this alteration, the named drama was staged in 1888 on the stage of the Moscow Maly Theater). The work began on July 10, by September 4 all the music was written, and in December the orchestration was completed. The first performance of the opera (together with the ballet The Nutcracker) took place on December 6 (18), 1892 at the St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre.

The touching story of the blind Iolanta, who was healed thanks to love, contains a great humanistic thought. Eternal darkness, in which the daughter of King Rene, unaware of her misfortune, lives serenely and calmly, becomes a symbol of spiritual blindness, which is a source of deep grief for people close to her. Only love and compassion ignite in Iolanta's heart a passionate desire to see the world, give rise to readiness for self-sacrifice and courage to endure torment, at the cost of which she will be able to see clearly.

The opera is perceived as an enthusiastic, radiant anthem of love, revealing the best sides of the human soul, bringing with it the light of knowledge, enjoyment of beauty and happiness.

«Иоланта» — лирическая одноактная опера П. И. Чайковского на либретто М. И. Чайковского по драме Генрика Герца «Дочь короля Рене». Действие оперы происходит в XV веке в горах Южной Франции.

Это последняя опера Чайковского. В 1884 году композитор прочел перевод одноактной драмы в стихах датского писателя Генрика Герца (1798—1870) «Дочь короля Рене» (1845) и пленился оригинальностью, поэтичностью сюжета. Внимание композитора отвлекла работа над другими произведениями, и лишь в 1891 году он приступил к сочинению «Иоланты». Брату композитора М. И. Чайковскому (1850—1916) было заказано либретто по драме Герца в переделке В. Зотова (в этой переделке названная драма была поставлена в 1888 году на сцене московского Малого театра). Работа началась 10 июля, к 4 сентября вся музыка была написана, а в декабре закончена оркестровка. Первое представление оперы (вместе с балетом «Щелкунчик»), состоялось 6 (18) декабря 1892 года в петербургском Мариинском театре.

Трогательная история слепой Иоланты, исцелившейся благодаря любви, заключает в себе большую гуманистическую мысль. Вечный мрак, в котором безмятежно и спокойно живет не подозревающая о своем несчастье дочь короля Рене, становится символом душевной слепоты, являющейся для близких ей людей источником глубокого горя. Только любовь и сострадание зажигают в сердце Иоланты страстное желание увидеть мир, рождают готовность к самопожертвованию и мужество вынести муки, ценой которых она сможет прозреть.

Опера воспринимается как восторженный, лучезарный гимн любви, открывающей лучшие стороны человеческой души, несущей с собой свет познания, наслаждение красотой и счастье.
