Bachs Johannes-Passion wordt nog wel eens gezien als ‘het kleine broertje’ van de Matthäus-Passion. Wat betreft lengte en bezetting snijdt die typering hout, maar verder staan de twee op dezelfde — grote — hoogte. Belangrijkste verschil tussen de beide verklankingen van het lijdensevangelie is het fellere karakter van de Johannes-Passion. Jezus is hier veel meer de krachtige verlosser van de mensheid dan het beklagenswaardige slachtoffer van een complot. Twee Nederlandse topensembles en een keur aan gelauwerde solisten buigen zich vanavond over dit meeslepende meesterwerk.

Het Orkest van de Achttiende Eeuw en Cappella Amsterdam hebben in de loop van de jaren een hechte band opgebouwd. Onder leiding van Daniel Reuss en met solisten als Henk Neven (Christus) en Thomas Walker (Evangelist), buigen ze zich na het succes van 2017 opnieuw over Bachs Johannes Passion.

Korter, maar ook intenser. Zo ervaren veel muziekliefhebbers de Johannes-Passion van Bach, als ze hem met de Matthäus vergelijken. Het was de eerste passie die Bach, net aangetreden als Thomascantor, in Leipzig componeerde. Met de Johannes-Passion wilde hij zichzelf op Goede Vrijdag 1724 bewijzen voor zijn nieuwe publiek. Het monumentale, dramatische werk zal zijn uitwerking niet gemist hebben.

Bach 's Johannes-Passion is sometimes seen as 'the little brother' of the St Matthew Passion . In terms of length and occupation, that characterization makes sense, but otherwise the two are on the same — great — height. The main difference between the two versions of the Passion Gospel is the fiercer character of the John Passion . Jesus here is much more the powerful savior of mankind than the pitiful victim of a conspiracy. Two top Dutch ensembles and a selection of acclaimed soloists will examine this compelling masterpiece tonight.

Over the years, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century and Cappella Amsterdam have built up a close bond. Under the direction of Daniel Reuss and with soloists such as Henk Neven (Christus) and Thomas Walker (Evangelist), after the success of 2017, they will once again focus on Bach's Johannes Passion.

Shorter, but also more intense. This is how many music lovers experience Bach's St. John Passion when they compare it with St. Matthew . It was the first passion that Bach, who had just started as a Thomas cantor, composed in Leipzig. With the St John Passion he wanted to prove himself on Good Friday 1724 for his new audience. The monumental, dramatic work will not have missed its effect.
