“I need to experience real winters again and a spring that erupts from one moment to the next. I have to hear Russian sounds in my ears again and talk to people of my own flesh and blood so that they can give me back what I'm missing here: their songs and mine”: When Sergei Prokofiev wrote his 2nd Violin Concerto in Paris in 1935, in which Julian Rachlin lets the sparks fly here as a soloist and as a conductor, he did so with a view to his eagerly awaited return to his homeland, which had of course changed from the Tsarist Empire to the Soviet Union. Almost 50 years earlier, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony also suffused with longing, not only in the famous horn melody of the slow movement: longing for the certainty that, despite all the melancholy, one still had enough creative power in oneself, to be able to create another great work. It became a new symphony of fate. In contrast, the Tragic Overture by Johannes Brahms pulses with longing rebellion against a merciless fate: the dramatic prelude to the gripping opening concert of Herbstgold 2023 with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

„Ich muss wieder richtige Winter erleben und einen Frühling, der von einem Augenblick zum anderen ausbricht. Ich muss wieder russische Laute in meinen Ohren hören und mit Leuten von meinem Fleisch und Blut reden, damit sie mir zurückgeben, was mir hier fehlt: ihre und meine Lieder“: Als Sergej Prokofjew 1935 in Paris sein 2. Violinkonzert schrieb, in dem Julian Rachlin hier als Solist wie als Dirigent die Funken sprühen lässt, tat er es bereits im Hinblick auf seine sehnsüchtig erwartete Rückkehr in die Heimat, die sich freilich vom Zarenreich in die Sowjetunion verwandelt hatte. Sehnsucht durchwehte knapp 50 Jahre früher auch Pjotr Iljitsch Tschaikowskis 5. Symphonie, nicht nur in der berühmten Hornmelodie des langsamen Satzes: Sehnsucht nach der Gewissheit, bei aller Schwermut noch genug Schöpferkraft in sich zu haben, um ein weiteres großes Werk schaffen zu können. Es wurde eine neuerliche Schicksalssymphonie. Sehnsüchtiges Aufbegehren gegen ein unbarmherziges Los durchpulst dagegen die Tragische Ouvertüre von Johannes Brahms: der dramatische Auftakt zum packenden Eröffnungskonzert von Herbstgold 2023 mit dem Chamber Orchestra of Europe.
