Schumann penned these words in 1839 in a letter to his wife, Clara Wieck, about his Concerto in A minor. This dense score was a long time in the making (it was only completed in 1845), and shows the composer’s typical shifting moods and formal anxieties to overcome traditional models. As in the first movement, opening with an energetic strike by the orchestra followed by a fierce attack by the piano, now left to the interpretive skills of Frenchman David Fray. The RAI Orchestra, under the baton its Slovak conductor for several years now, will give voice to the “natural” pagan vitality, the extreme romanticism and powerful sound architecture of Strauss’s tone poem.

“Quanto al concerto, ti ho già detto che si tratta di un qualcosa a metà tra sinfonia, concerto e grande sonata”: così, nel 1839, Robert Schumann scrive alla moglie Clara Wieck a proposito del Concerto in la minore. Una pagina densa (la porterà a termine anni dopo, nel 1845) in cui fondere tutte le ansie espressive e formali che lo assillavano, superando gli schemi tradizionali, fin dall’imperioso e celebre attacco del primo movimento, strappo dell’orchestra e cascata di accordi al pianoforte qui affidati alla trasparenza e allo spessore interpretativo del francese David Fray. E dell’Orchestra Rai che, sotto la bacchetta del maestro slovacco che l’ha guidata per anni, dà voce alla vitalità “naturale” e pagana, e all’estremo romanticismo, che anima le mastodontiche architetture sonore del poema sinfonico di Strauss.
