Even more than The Fairy Queen, King Arthur is the typical model of the mask, a dramatic spectacle accompanied by incidental music independent of the action. King Arthur is Purcell's most popular opera, mixing magical and unreal scenes that create a sort of uninterrupted musical fairyland. With musical pages of exceptional beauty, many tunes rub shoulders with the sublime. Such, the air of the “Génie du Froid” in the 3rd act inspired by the “Choeur des Trembleurs” of Isis by Lully or “Fairest isle”, a dazzling tribute to the island of Brittany.
