It's opening night and the cast is star-studded and conflict-ridden: divorced couple Lilli Vanessi and Fred Graham, rising star Lois Lane, and her boyfriend Bill. William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" is to be performed as a musical. Lilli and Fred vacillate between jealousy and love; Bill is fleeing from debt-collecting mobsters who also happen to be theater buffs; and Lois finds herself the object of Fred's affection. Lilli's tantrums threaten the opening night performance but inevitably, the curtain rises.
An immensely talented composer and brilliant lyricist, Cole Porter blended Shakespeare's classic comedy with a gangster comedy theme to create an irreverent satire on nepotism and emancipation for his play-within-a-play musical. The snappy lyrics, catchy melodies and rousing dance numbers, won the composer five Tonys in 1949 and produced his biggest Broadway success.
