Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki is a prodigy in the world of piano. At the young age of 28, he has already carved out a stellar career in the classical music world. Following his acclaimed performance with the Copenhagen Phil in the fall of 2023, there was a keen desire to have him return. We are thrilled to announce Jan Lisiecki as a featured artist for the Summer Classical 2024 program. He is hailed as "the most accomplished pianist of his generation." At just 15, Jan Lisiecki secured a contract with Deutsche Grammophon, the leading record label globally, where he has released 10 albums to date, notably including works by Chopin, an area of his expertise. Currently, he performs about 100 concerts annually across the globe. Jan Lisiecki's piano recital at Tivoli Gardens will feature preludes by three distinguished composers: Bach, Rachmaninoff, and Chopin. A prelude traditionally serves as an introduction, either to a church service or as a musical preface to a larger subsequent piece. This was exemplified by J.S. Bach, whose preludes were often brief introductions to more complex fugues. In the 19th century, the prelude transformed into an independent musical form, as seen in the works of Chopin and Rachmaninoff. Both composers drew inspiration from Bach's preludes, making Lisiecki's selection of these three composers for his concert particularly meaningful. When Chopin composed his 24 Preludes, op. 28, he was residing in Mallorca, seeking respite for his deteriorating health. Despite the unfavourable weather and worsening condition, he composed some of his most exquisite music. Chopin's inspiration in Mallorca was J.S. Bach's Das Wohltemperierte Klavier, a collection of preludes and fugues in all keys. Emulating Bach, Chopin created the 24 Preludes op. 28 – a suite of 24 small yet brilliant piano pieces, rich in contrasts, colours, and emotions. In the hands of Jan Lisiecki, these pieces are poised to be performed masterfully.
