In April 1869, Vladimir Stasov offered Alexander Borodin as an opera plot a wonderful monument of ancient Russian literature, The Tale of Igor's Campaign (1185–1187). The text and music of the opera were composed simultaneously. The opera was written for 18 years, but was not completed. After Borodin's death, Alexander Glazunov restored the overture from memory and completed the missing episodes of the opera on the basis of the author's sketches, while Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov instrumented most of it. The premiere was a great success on October 23 (November 4), 1890 in St. Petersburg, on the stage of the Mariinsky Theatre.

"Prince Igor" is an epic opera about indomitable unrestrained prowess, duty and courageous will, human conscience and the need for sincere repentance for every deed. The heroic images of Prince Igor and Princess Yaroslavna are the archetypes of the Russian epic, and it is especially valuable that these are not fictional characters, but historical figures.

"Prince Igor" staged by Yuri Laptev does not aim to show the true patriotism and heroism of the characters. The male characters in the director's cut are selfish, treacherous, and driven only by their own ambitions. Positive traits are only female characters.

The staging of the pearl of the classical Russian opera repertoire allowed talented young artists to realize their creative potential, as was the case with such legendary singers as Lkhasaran Linhovoin, Badma Baldakov, Sayan Radnaev, Kim Bazarsadaev.

"Prince Igor" at the Buryat Opera and Ballet Theater

The opera "Prince Igor" was first staged by the Buryat Theater in 1950 (director E. Konchevsky). The 1959 production was directed by Alexei Kireev, who, in his reading of Alexander Borodin's score, retained the best of what E. Konchevsky found. The choir sounded excellent (Mikhail and Yadviga Epshtein acted as choirmasters), which is important for such a “choral” opera as “Prince Igor”. Choreographer Robert Gerbek recreated the famous choreography of Polovtsian Dances by Mikhail Fokine. The scenery of Alexander Timin and Maria Shestakova left a vivid impression. The performance featured a strong ensemble of soloists. The talent of Lhasaran Linhovoin, who performed the part of the Polovtsian Khan Konchak, aroused universal admiration.

The next revival of the play took place in 2007. The main parts were performed by Munkhzul Namkhai, Sayan Radnaev, Marina Korobenkova, Valentina Tsydypova, Galina Shoydagbaeva, Grigory Bagadaev, Vladislav Kalashnikov, Bator Budaev, Damba Zandanov, Badma Gombozhapov.
