"Oh comm, du wunderbare, ersehnte Nacht!" – sings the man to his mistress in Richard Strauss' song opening the album From Secession to Distortion . This one verse from a poem by John Henry Mackay could be a poetic summary of the album by Tomasz Konieczny and Lech Napierała, where the affirmation of life and the search for beauty and love are juxtaposed with the constant gravitation towards everything that evokes fear - especially night and death. On their sixth joint album, the Polish Viennese duo presents a selection of songs by Richard Strauss to words by various poets, works by Aleksander Nowak to poems by Bolesław Leśmian and two buffo arias by Henryk Czyż.


All Straussian songs selected for the Art Nouveau album were composed at the end of the 19th century. It was a time of great civilization changes and social turmoil. During the decade, vaccines were disseminated, photographic films began to be mass-produced, more and more railways were built, Karl Friedrich Benz patented the automobile, Friedrich Nietzsche had a nervous breakdown when he saw a coachman mistreating a horse, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created the character of Sherlock Holmes. On the horizon of the global imagination, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty grew, which are still one of the most recognizable symbols of the Western world. Art Nouveau flourished at that time. Young artists argued with heavy and pathetic historicism, promoting works full of floristic motifs, organic ornaments, that may have a use value. Art Nouveau artists were inspired by Richard Wagner's idea of ​​Gesamtkunstwerk - a total work combining many fields of art. Alfred Roller, one of the leading creators of Art Nouveau, created costumes and sets for operas, including to Richard Strauss' Electra. The German-Jewish historian Oskar Bie called Strauss's songs from the early period of his work "a prelude to great operatic works" - in his small works he experimented with what later delighted listeners in large forms. His songs, although deeply rooted in the romantic works of his predecessors, are also the songs of the present day. They show an important historical moment when the genre leaves private salons, heading for ever larger concert halls (this phrase was initiated in the 1870s by the Viennese tenor Gustav Walter, who was the first to organize public Liederabende, with which he soon performed in halls all over Europe). Songs had previously been considered a mediocre genre, unsuitable for great symphony. Their appreciation was in line with the ideas of Art Nouveau, trend that tries to abolish the divisions between high and low art. Another current element of Strauss's songs was their naturalism and the nerve of social criticism (the musicologist Jürgen May even notes in it a preview of Kurt Weil's work). Tomasz Konieczny and Lech Napierała's cooperation began with the songs of Richard Strauss, when, on the initiative of the pianist, in 2014 they performed at the Krakow Philharmonic. From Secession to Distortionis a kind of brace connecting the hitherto activities of Konieczny and Napierała. The major part of the repertoire of the star of world operas and a valued teacher and chamber musician are the greatest classics, including: Franz Schubert, Stanisław Moniuszko, Siergiej Rachmaninov, Mykoła Lysenko. However, Konieczny and Napierała do not shy away from contemporary music. In 2020, they recorded the album Songs & Sonnets (Anaklasis/PWM) dedicated to the vocal and instrumental work of Romuald Twardowski. Two years later, the album Apocalypse was released, on which the Kindertodtenlieder cycle by Gustav Mahler is juxtaposed with songs by Aleksander Nowak to words by Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński (commissioned personally by Tomasz Konieczny). Today we can hear another series composed by Nowak for the duo Konieczny and Napierała - Leśmian couplets. let's hope


And in Bolesław Leśmian you can hear the ringing of horses' hooves in Around the Flowerbed,in which "the void is darkened". In the poetry set to music by Strauss, death is an outstanding theme, while in Leśmian's poetry there is a theme of something even more final and indefinite - nothingness. All the more disturbing that for a poet visible in the manifestations of the reality that surrounds us. In Leśmian's works, many things lie on the borderline of worlds, as he wrote in Invisible: "There are crowds of invisible beings with us everywhere" (after all, according to the words of the poet's daughter, he returned to her many times as a ghost - he was consistent in his work). Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz in his book Leśmian. The encyclopedia called it being between "non-existence". Another motif running through Leśmian's entire oeuvre and present in Nowak's songs is pain, often associated with masochistic love, as in Reptiles. “Melancholy and death alternate with wildness and drive. Desire, excitement and the rush for fulfillment, with violence, then emptiness and silence. Bolek is not a good boy,” wrote Aleksander Nowak in his online diary.

I would characterize the cycle Leśmian – couplets as a combination of musical suspension and impulsiveness, which Tomasz Konieczny's strong and dark timbre tries to tame. The piano, however, is never covered up, constantly remaining the driving force behind impetuous stories. After all, as Leśmian wrote: "Rhythm rules the word and transforms it in its own way". Listening to the song to words by the author of W raspberry bush, I am struck by the amount of drama contained in Tomasz Konieczny's singing. Their performance is also an acting creation - listening to his vocals, we can almost see his gestures and grimaces.


The sultry and heavy repertoire of Strauss and Nowak is matched extremely well by the whimsical arias of Henryk Czyż - a composer particularly associated with Łódź, Tomasz Konieczny's birthplace, and Warsaw, where the singer made his debut on the silver screen in the role of Zbigniew Cybulski in Ring with an Eagle in the Crown, directed by Andrzej Wajda . Does he turn out to be not only a great artist and conductor, but also a great poet? Listening to these pieces for the first time, I was convinced that he had composed music to lesser-known works by Brzechwa or Tuwim. Anyway, under the layer of absurd, maybe even slightly surreal words, there is a lot of ambiguity, sometimes even macabre.

Ten jeden wers z wiersza Johna Henry’ego Mackaya mógłby stanowić poetyckie podsumowanie płyty Tomasza Koniecznego i Lecha Napierały, na której afirmacja życia oraz poszukiwanie piękna i miłości zestawione są z ciągłym ciążeniem ku wszystkiemu, co budzi lęk – z nocą i śmiercią na czele. Duet polskich wiedeńczyków na swojej szóstej wspólnej płycie przedstawia nam wybór pieśni Richarda Straussa do słów różnych poetów, utwory Aleksandra Nowaka do wierszy Bolesława Leśmiana i dwie arie buffo Henryka Czyża.


Wszystkie Straussowskie pieśni wybrane na secesyjną płytę zostały skomponowane u schyłku XIX wieku. Był to czas wielkich zmian cywilizacyjnych i zawirowań społecznych. W ciągu wspomnianego dziesięciolecia upowszechniono szczepionki, zaczęto masową produkcję filmów fotograficznych, powstawało coraz więcej tras kolejowych, Karl Friedrich Benz opatentował automobil, Friedrich Nietzsche doznał załamania nerwowego widząc woźnicę maltretującego konia, a sir Arthur Conan Doyle stworzył postać Sherlocka Holmesa. Na horyzoncie globalnej wyobraźni wyrosła Wieża Eiffla i Statua Wolności, które do dzisiaj są jednymi z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych symboli zachodniego świata. W sztuce rozkwitała wtedy secesja. Młodzi artyści polemizowali z ciężkim i patetycznym historyzmem, propagując twórczość pełną motywów florystycznych, organicznych ornamentów, mogącą mieć wartość użytkową. Związani z secesją artyści inspirowali się stworzoną przez Richarda Wagnera ideą Gesamtkunstwerk – dzieła totalnego, łączącego w sobie wiele dziedzin sztuki. Alfred Roller, jeden z czołowych twórców secesji, tworzył kostiumy i scenografie do oper, m.in. do Elektry Richarda Straussa. Urodzony w Monachium kompozytor skomponował na otwarcie Monachijskiej Wystawy Sztuk w 1897 roku Hymne „Licht du ewiglich Eines” na chór żeński i orkiestrę. Jego pieśni publikowane były w prowadzonych przez secesjonistycznych artystów czasopismach Der Kunstwart i Die Jugend.


Niemiecko-żydowski historyk Oskar Bie nazywał pieśni Straussa z wczesnego okresu twórczości „przygrywką do wielkich dzieł” operowych – w swoich drobnych utworach eksperymentował z tym, co później zachwycało słuchaczy w wielkich formach. Jego pieśni, chociaż głęboko zakorzenione w romantycznych dziełach poprzedników, są także śpiewem współczesności. W dokonanym przez Tomasza Koniecznego wyborze najbardziej słychać to w utworze Ach weh mir unglückhaftem Mann do tekstu Feliksa Dahna, w którym nędzarz wyobraża sobie moment wyznania miłości ukochanej do którego doszłoby, gdyby posiadał majątek i karetę z czterema białymi końmi. Zdaje się, że cztery konie nigdy nie zwiastują w niemieckiej liryce niczego dobrego. Powracają w Ich liebe dich, ostatniej z wybranych pieśni Straussa, w których miłosne uczucie prowadzi wprost do grobu.


Współpraca Tomasza Koniecznego i Lecha Napierały rozpoczęła się właśnie od pieśni Richarda Straussa, kiedy to z inicjatywy pianisty w 2014 roku wystąpili w Filharmonii Krakowskiej. From Secession to Distortion jest swego rodzaju klamrą spinającą dotychczasową działalność Koniecznego i Napierały. Przeważającą część repertuaru gwiazdy światowych oper i cenionego pedagoga i kameralisty stanowią najwięksi klasycy, m.in.: Franz Schubert, Stanisław Moniuszko, Siergiej Rachmaninow, Mykoła Łysenko. Konieczny i Napierała nie stronią jednak od muzyki współczesnej. W 2020 roku nagrali płytę Songs & Sonnets (Anaklasis/PWM) poświęconą wokalno-instrumentalnej twórczości Romualda Twardowskiego. Dwa lata później ukazał się album Apocalypse, na którym cykl Kindertodtenlieder Gustava Mahlera zestawiony jest z pieśniami Aleksandra Nowaka do słów Krzysztofa Kamila Baczyńskiego (utworami zamówionymi osobiście przez Tomasza Koniecznego). Miejmy nadzieję, że to dopiero początek współpracy tych twórców, dzięki której wielka literatura powraca do polskiej muzyki – przez ostatnie lata kompozytorzy rzadko sięgali po poezję, szczególnie uznawaną za „klasyczną”.


I u Bolesława Leśmiana słychać w Dookoła klombu dzwonienie końskich kopyt, w których „próżnia się mroczy”. W poezji umuzycznianej przez Straussa wybijającym się tematem jest śmierć, u Leśmiana pojawia się wątek czegoś jeszcze bardziej ostatecznego i nieokreślonego – nicości. Tym bardziej niepokojącego, że dla poety dostrzegalnego w przejawach otaczającej nas rzeczywistości. U Leśmiana wiele rzeczy znajduje się na pograniczu światów, jak pisał w Niewidzialnych: „Niewidzialnych istot tłumy sąsiadują z nami wszędzie” (zresztą, według słów córki poety, wielokrotnie powracał do niej jako duch – był w swojej twórczości konsekwentny). Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz w swojej książce Leśmian. Encyklopedia nazywał to byciem pomiędzy „nie-do-istnieniem”. Kolejnym motywem przewijającym się przez całą twórczość Leśmiana i obecną w pieśniach Nowaka jest ból, często powiązany z masochistyczną miłością, jak w Gadzie. „Melancholia i śmierć na przemian z dzikością i popędem. Pożądanie, podniecenie i pęd ku spełnieniu, z przemocą, a potem pustka i cisza. Nie jest Bolek grzecznym chłopcem” – pisał Aleksander Nowak w swoim internetowym dzienniku.

Cykl Leśmian – dwuwiersze scharakteryzowałbym jako połączenie muzycznego zawieszenia i popędliwości, którą próbuje okiełznać mocna i ciemna barwa głosu Tomasza Koniecznego. Fortepian jednak nigdy nie zostaje przykryty, pozostając nieustannie kołem napędowym porywistych opowieści. W końcu jak pisał Leśmian: „Rytm włada słowem i przeobraża je po swojemu”. Słuchając pieśni do słów autora W malinowym chruśniaku uderza mnie ilość dramatyzmu zawartego w śpiewie Tomasza Koniecznego. Ich wykonanie jest także kreacją aktorską – słuchając jego wokalistyki możemy niemal naocznie zobaczyć gesty i grymasy.


Z dusznym i ciężkim repertuarem Straussa i Nowaka niesłychanie dobrze współgrają krotochwilne arie Henryka Czyża – kompozytora szczególnie związanego z Łodzią, miejscem urodzenia Tomasza Koniecznego, i Warszawą, gdzie śpiewak debiutował na srebrnym ekranie w roli Zbigniewa Cybulskiego w Pierścionku z orłem w koronie w reżyserii Andrzeja Wajdy. Czyż okazuje się być nie tylko świetnym twórcą i dyrygentem, ale i doskonałym poetą. Słuchając tych utworów po raz pierwszy, byłem przekonany, że skomponował muzykę do mniej znanych utworów Brzechwy albo Tuwima. Zresztą pod warstwą słów absurdalnych, może nawet lekko surrealnych, kryje się dużo dwuznaczności, czasami wręcz makabry.
