They are one of the dazzling musician couples on the international concert stage: the conductor Sir Simon Rattle and his wife, the mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená. For Mahler's moving late work "Das Lied von der Erde", which explores the boundaries between song cycle and symphony with virtuosity, this dream combination performs alongside British tenor Andrew Staples and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe founded by Claudio Abbado. If Mahler's monumental music is permeated by the private shocks of the last years of his life, the "Metamorphoses" by the 81-year-old Strauss, still entitled "Mourning for Munich" in the first sketch from 1944, are also filled with a melancholy mood of farewell. A concert evening of touching density with an outstanding cast.
