By opening his opera with a prelude for strings with an unprecedented economy of means, Verdi affirmed in 1853 his desire to shake up conventions and norms. This is not the least of the radicalism of his work: his “Traviata” implacably lays bare the violence of a society which advocates material enjoyment and ends up sacrificing an innocent victim on the altar of bourgeois morality. Simon Stone likes to work hand-to-hand on the pieces of the repertoire to lead them towards more intimate territories. This director, who is one of the most noticed in the theater today, is making his highly anticipated debut at the Opéra national de Paris.
