About the work

Melodrama in three acts by Francesco Maria Piave Third masterpiece of the popular trilogy, La traviata is considered one of the most significant works of the Verdi genius. The subject is that of Alexandre Dumas son, the controversial “La dame aux camélias”, which the composer decides to set courageously in the contemporary era. The first performance, staged at the Fenice in Venice in 1853, was a resounding failure not only for the poor quality of the singers, but above all for the audacity of the subject and the modernity of the score. Here Verdi eliminates the usual overture and composes two orchestral preludes (in the first and third act) which accurately and subtly describe the emotional atmosphere that will develop throughout the opera. The story deals with the love story of Violetta, a shrewd worldly woman, and Alfredo, her dispassionate admirer. Only with him will the woman discover that she is in love for the first time, but first of all Germont, Alfredo's father, will oppose their union, and then the illness that will inexorably lead Violetta to death.
