The plot of the popular operatic melodrama was based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas son, which he later remade into a play. The situation when a courtesan appeared on stage as the main character, sacrificing her love for a young aristocrat for the sake of his well-being and career, was perceived by the Minister of Police as an undermining of public morals. The matter was complicated by the fact that the prototype of the courtesan was a real person - a well-known lady of the demi-monde in Parisian salons and the mistress of Dumas the son. As a result, the play was banned for a long time from being staged in France. No less public resonance was later caused by Verdi's act, thanks to which for the first time a heroine with such a dubious social status appeared on the opera stage.

Источником сюжета популярной оперной мелодрамы послужил роман Александра Дюма-сына, переделанный им впоследствии в пьесу. Ситуация, когда в качестве главной героини на сцене появлялась куртизанка, жертвующая своей любовью к молодому аристократу ради его благополучия и карьеры, была воспринята министром полиции как подрыв общественной морали. Дело осложнялось тем, что прототипом куртизанки была реальная персона – известная в парижских салонах дама полусвета и любовница Дюма-сына. В итоге пьеса была надолго запрещена к постановке во Франции. Не меньший общественный резонанс вызвал позднее и поступок Верди, благодаря которому впервые на оперной сцене появилась героиня со столь сомнительным социальным статусом.
