Bach’s Magnificat – A Spark of Liturgical Genius? / Different Liturgy / Who Said That Church Music is Depressing?
In 1723, the young Johann Sebastian Bach was appointed music director and organist of the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. At the time, Leipzig was a lively musical hub, and this new position was an important opportunity for Bach and his expanding family. Bach wished to introduce himself and his musical talent to the new audience in Leipzig, and tried to think of the best way to do so. Christmas was an excellent opportunity to write a festive liturgical work for the church’s annual festival, thus making his personal mark as the new music director. The church music written so far tended to be complex and heavy, and Bach’s sharp senses told him that he should write a light and approachable work for the audience. The superb result was the Magnificat: a work comprising twelve short movements, lasting merely half an hour, based on chapters from The Book of Luke, which depicts the pregnancy of Saint Mary from the discovery of her pregnancy to the birth of Jesus. Each movement of the Magnificat is like a painting in a gallery, depicting a moment in time as part of Mary’s journey to bring her greatest gift to humanity. What made the Magnificat so effective was Bach’s ability to reflect in music the dramatic and spiritual qualities of the text in each movement, while masterfully balancing the movements as part of a larger picture of the entire work.
The Magnificat is written for five solo singers, choir and orchestra, which was considered especially large at the time. Bach thickened the winds and gave a prominent part to the trumpets, who, from the opening movement, color the Magnificat in bright and festive hues. The choir portrays the narrator, depicting the unfolding of events, while the soloists’ movements stress emotional and reflective themes. The Magnificat has vibrant music and tells the story of Jesus’ birth in a joyful and sweeping manner. The soloists’ parts are virtuosic and brilliant, embellishing the text and adding to the strong impression the work leaves on its listeners.
The audience in Leipzig in 1723 must have loved what they heard at the Christmas festival – Bach remained in the city until his death, and from there he left the world his monumental works, such as the Passions and the B minor Mass, which made him one of the greatest liturgical composers of all time.

Sergey Prokofiev: Between Tradition and Revolution
Anyone who tried to define what kind of music Sergey Prokofiev composed did not completely succeed. Prokofiev is one of the major composers of the 20th century and one of the most fascinating, due among other things to his exceptional stylistic diversity, described as everything from “conservative” to “revolutionary.” Prokofiev composed in the complex political milieu of the former USSR, between the World Wars that changed forever the face of humanity, and of the arts. In the midst of the stormy world around him, Prokofiev tried to find his personal voice as a composer, while being forced to choose between his artistic aspirations and the restrictive and threatening whims of censorship. This conflict, which continued throughout most of his life, is prominent in Prokofiev’s music, and is manifested in two of his masterpieces performed in this concert: Symphony no. 1 (“Classical”) and Piano Concerto no. 3.
The First Symphony was written in 1917, at a time when symphonic music was characterized by sweeping emotional drama (remains of the post-Romantic period), alongside the avant-garde and the breaking of conventions (buds of the 20th century). By this time, Prokofiev had already written several works that began to establish his own sarcastic and adventurous personal harmonic style. It was, therefore, a surprise when he chose to write his first symphony in an entirely Mozartian style, with distinctly Classical characteristics in form, musical themes and orchestration. Prokofiev cleverly uses the well-known Classical form, infusing it with surprising harmonies, humorous themes and sophisticated rhythms, turning it into a light and captivating work that doesn’t take itself too seriously. He himself wrote in his diary, “My critics would probably say that I didn’t allow even Mozart to rest in peace…” Throughout the symphony’s movements, Prokofiev succeeds in combining his wild and acerbic personality with a popular and comforting Classical language, and maintains a playful spirit uncharacteristic of the composers of his time and nationality. In the fourth movement, he consciously breaks with the great Russian symphonic tradition of heavy and dramatic finales. Instead, he writes a joyful and vibrant movement, concluding the symphony in an optimistic vein. Prokofiev wrote in his diary that he composed the fourth movement extremely swiftly, and was concerned only that the movement might be considered “irresponsibly light.” Prokofiev was not worried about the audience’s response. He predicted that the listeners would love the simplicity and joyfulness of the symphony, and he was right. Thanks to charming melodies, polished compositional skills and a musical sense of humor, this symphony was a breath of fresh air, and has remained one of Prokofiev’s most beloved works even more than a century later.
After he finished writing his First Symphony, as the Revolution of 1917 raged in Russia, Prokofiev left his homeland and tried his luck abroad. He began composing his Third Piano Concerto before leaving Russia, but continued to work on it while residing in the USA, Germany and especially in Paris. Prokofiev was a gifted and virtuosic pianist and, during his years outside of Russia, thrived as a soloist. At the time of the Concerto’s composition, he was at the peak of his dexterity, perhaps the root of the work’s extreme virtuosity, challenging the soloist more than his other concertos. However, this is not an entertaining showpiece per se, but a concerto whose technical aspects serve complex and deep emotional musical ideas. No pianist combines these qualities more than Martha Argerich, whose fervent performances of the Third Concerto have won international acclaim. Argerich meets Prokofiev’s challenges with nonchalant lightness, thanks to her rare pianistic abilities, which enable her to play both brilliantly and elegantly. Alongside her phenomenal pianism, Argerich expresses the passion, depth and spontaneity that make Prokofiev one of the most intriguing composers of the 20th century.

באך מגניפיקט – ניצוץ של גאונות ליטורגית

סרגיי פרוקופייב: בין מסורת למהפכנות

כל מי שניסה להגדיר איזו מין מוזיקה הלחין סרגיי פרוקופייב, לא לגמרי הצליח. פרוקופייב הוא אחד המלחינים המרתקים והחשובים של המאה ה-20, בין היתר בזכות הגיוון הסגנוני יוצא הדופן של הכתיבה שלו, שזכתה לשלל הגדרות הנעות על הספקטרום שבין "שמרנית" ל"מהפכנית". פרוקופייב פעל בסביבה ההפוליטית המורכבת של ברית המועצות לשעבר, בתקופה שבין שתי מלחמות העולם ששינו את פני האנושות והאמנות לנצח. בלב הסערה העולמית שהתרחשה סביבו, ניסה פרוקופייב למצוא את הקול האישי שלו כמלחין תוך כדי כך שהוא נאלץ לבחור לא פעם בין השאיפות האמנותיות שלו ובין גחמות הצנזורה שהיו מאיימות ומגבילות. הקונפליקט שפרוקופייב היה שרוי בו רוב ימי חייו ניכר היטב במוזיקה שלו, ובא לידי ביטוי מוחשי בשתיים מיצירות המופת שלו שיבוצעו בקונצרט זו לצד זו: הסימפוניה מס' 1 "הקלאסית", והקונצ'רטו השלישי לפסנתר.
