The Bow and the Reed – that is what Layale Chaker has called her cycle for solo violin and ‘a capella’ choir. In this composition, the Lebanese violinist combines contemporary Aramaic poetry by Nineb Lamassu with traditional poetry. In her music, Layale Chaker refers to classical Arabic precedents as well as to western traditions and jazz.Iraqi poet Lamassu writes his lyrics in Assyrian, also known as Modern Aramaic or Syriac, a language listed as vulnerable by UNESCO but still spoken in certain areas of Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Syria. Its roots go deep: Most early Christian texts were written in Aramaic, and this liturgy still exists today in some monasteries in Syria. In a second part of the concert, the Cappella Amsterdam will sing a program compiled from this heritage. This vocal ensemble has received numerous awards for its outstanding choral recordings and is always on the lookout for particularly valuable choral works, be they old or new. The Syrian song researcher and composer Nouri Iskandar, who headed the Music Conservatory in Aleppo for decades, helped with the selection of the early Christian repertoire.
