Seinem Opernerstling »Le Villi« legt Puccini eine Sage zugrunde, in der die Villi, die Seelen junger Frauen, untreuen Männern zur Gefahr werden. Roberto, der im Frühling seine Verlobung mit Guglielmos Tochter Anna feiert, kann die düsteren Vorahnungen seiner Braut nicht zerstreuen. Sie sorgt sich um ihr gemeinsames Glück, da Roberto am gleichen Abend in die Ferne reisen wird. Tatsächlich kehrt der Bräutigam erst im Winter zurück. Und da ist Anna bereits bei den Villi zu finden.
Für die Tanzoper arbeitet Kai Anne Schuhmacher eng mit Natalie Wagner zusammen, die mit der Tanzcompagnie über das reale Geschehen hinaus die geisterhafte Welt von Verlustängsten und Rachegedanken visualisiert. Mit dem gefeierten Frühwerk, das die große melodische Begabung Puccinis bereits erkennen lässt, ehren die Landesbühnen Sachsen den Maestro 2024 anlässlich seines 100. Todestages.

Puccini based his debut opera "Le Villi" on a legend in which the Villi, the souls of young women, become a danger to unfaithful men. Roberto, who celebrates his engagement to Guglielmo's daughter Anna in the spring, cannot dispel his bride's dark premonitions. She worries about their happiness together, as Roberto will be traveling far away that same evening. In fact, the groom does not return until winter. And there Anna can already be found at the Villi.
For the dance opera, Kai Anne Schuhmacher works closely with Natalie Wagner, who with the dance company visualizes the ghostly world of fear of loss and thoughts of revenge beyond the real events. With the celebrated early work, which already reveals Puccini's great melodic talent, the Saxony State Theaters will honor the maestro in 2024 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death.
