About the work

Bizet had not yet reached the age of 25 in 1863 when his first important opera was staged at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris, with good public reception but soon forgotten and revalued as his first masterpiece only after the composer's death. Les pêcheurs de perles is a manifesto of exoticism, very fashionable in Europe and especially in the colonial France of the time also thanks to the stories of travellers. Set on the island of Ceylon among the "pearl fishermen" of the title, the story tells of a friendship between two men that overcomes jealousy and of a veiled virgin, consecrated against her will to the temple, who chooses love, with mysterious rituals and pyres that become salvific. But above all we are enveloped by enchanted melodies and waves of orchestral timbres that evoke the distant seas and the thrill of the unknown.
