György Ligeti achieved what most composers can only dream of: Not only did his music cause music history to leap forward a few lightyears. But at the same time, Ligeti himself became an icon of pop culture, one factor certainly being that his music turned out to be indispensable to the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick’s famous Space Odyssey. After Ligeti’s escape from Hungary in 1956, Cologne was his first port of call. Now, on the occasion of Ligeti’s 100th birthday, the Gürzenich Orchestra and many prominent guests are hosting an unforgettable evening to commemorate the great composer – mechanically precise and dadaistic, cosmic and grounded, atmospheric and delirious.
