L'incoronazione di Poppea
Written 370 years ago at the very beginning of opera history, L'incoronazione di Poppea also marks a high point of the opera genre up to the present day and shows modern people whose vanities, passions and abysses are by no means distant from us today. In Poppea , instead of a mythological story , Monteverdi set to music for the first time a historical, surprisingly amoral material that could be read in a contemporary way. However, he was less interested in the historical facts: the excesses and orgies of Emperor Nero only appear marginally in the opera. The disastrous entanglement of the characters in power structures and their susceptibility to seduction preoccupied the composer far more.

Poppea has only one goal: to become Nero's wife and empress instead of Ottavia. Poppea uses her charms unscrupulously; Nero has long fallen for her beauty. She cleverly arouses Nero against the philosopher Seneca, who sees through her thirst for power. In order for Poppea to become empress, Seneca must die. Ottavia sees only one way to stop Poppea: she instigates Ottone to murder his unfaithful lover Poppea. But the plan fails and instead gives Nero the long-awaited reason to officially repudiate Ottavia. Poppea becomes empress.

Monteverdi brilliantly captured the tyrannical hysteria of Nero and the sensuality of Poppea. The musical dramatist Monteverdi appears modern to us through the inseparable combination of language and music, through which he achieves a high degree of drama in the short scenes, and through the virtuoso combination of comedy and tragedy. Julie Fuchs makes her role debut as Poppea, as do Stéphanie d'Oustrac as Ottavia and Nahuel Di Pierro as Seneca. After Zimmermann 's Soldiers and Prokofiev's The Fiery Angel , Calixto Bieito presents his third directorial work at the opera house. His partner on the podium is Ottavio Dantone, one of the leading conductors of Italian baroque music.

Vor 370 Jahren noch ganz zu Beginn der Operngeschichte entstanden, markiert L’incoronazione di Poppea zugleich einen Höhepunkt der Gattung Oper bis in unsere Gegenwart und zeigt moderne Menschen, deren Eitelkeiten, Leidenschaften und Abgründe uns heute keineswegs fern sind. Monteverdi vertonte in Poppea statt einer mythologischen Geschichte erstmals einen historischen, überraschend amoralischen Stoff, der sich durchaus zeitkritisch lesen liess. Dabei interessierte er sich allerdings weniger für die historischen Tatsachen: Die Exzesse und Orgien des Kaisers Nero kommen in der Oper nur am Rande vor. Weit mehr beschäftigten den Komponisten die unheilvolle Verstrickung der Figuren in Machtstrukturen und ihre Verführbarkeit.

Poppea verfolgt nur ein Ziel: Gattin Neros und anstelle Ottavias Kaiserin zu werden. Skrupellos setzt Poppea ihre Reize ein; längst ist Nero ihrer Schönheit verfallen. Geschickt weiss sie Nero gegen den Philosophen Seneca aufzubringen, der ihren Machtwillen durchschaut. Damit Poppea Kaiserin werden kann, muss Seneca sterben. Ottavia sieht nur einen Ausweg, um Poppea aufzuhalten: Sie stiftet Ottone zum Mord an seiner untreuen Geliebten Poppea an. Doch der Plan scheitert und liefert Nero stattdessen den ersehnten Anlass, Ottavia offiziell zu verstossen. Poppea wird Kaiserin.

Brillant hat Monteverdi die tyrannische Hysterie Neros und die Sinnlichkeit Poppeas musikalisch eingefangen. Modern erscheint uns der Musikdramatiker Monteverdi durch die untrennbare Verbindung von Sprache und Musik, durch die er in den kurzen Szenen eine hohe Dramatik erreicht, und durch die virtuose Kombination von Komik und Tragik. Ihr Rollendebüt als Poppea gibt Julie Fuchs, ebenso wie Stéphanie d’Oustrac als Ottavia und Nahuel Di Pierro als Seneca. Nach Zimmermanns Soldaten und Prokofjews Der feurige Engel präsentiert Calixto Bieito seine dritte Regiearbeit am Opernhaus. Sein Partner am Dirigentenpult ist mit Ottavio Dantone einer der führenden Dirigenten für italienische Barockmusik.
