Vaughan Williams' music has long been a source of inspiration for composer Julian Philips and writer Rebecca Hurst. This concert-theatre work sets out to use ideas of pilgrimage to unlock key themes that thread through RVW's life and work; a search for the numinous, for transcendence in landscape and place, for spiritual enrichment in the natural world, and the transformative power of music and art in both an individuial and communal sense. Looking West seeks a continuity with the central concerns of Vaughan Williams' legacy in an age of climate crisis and political instability.
