Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor – Romeo and Juliet , so to speak , in the Scottish Lowlands – is by no means a private love tragedy, but an eminently political story that shows how a power system deforms human relationships to the core and ultimately eats them away. Donizetti lent his most haunting music to the rising and dying of betrayed love: revenge is bloody, madness is deadly. And the abused feelings - says the director - "destroy everything and everyone".
