Walter Scott's novel The Bride of Lammermoor served as the literary basis for Lucia di Lammermoor. The libretto was written by the talented Italian poet Salvatore Camarano, on whose texts many prominent composers have written, including Verdi ("Troubadour"). The novel describes a wide range of aspects of Scottish life and history, but in his libretto Camarano uses only the central plot line. He complies with the requirements of opera drama.

Donizetti was fond of comic and lyrical plots, but the libretto of Lucia di Lammermoor, though imbued with deep tragedy, pleased him greatly, and he agreed to write the music. Donizetti usually wrote his operas quickly and intensely. Now, however, The Maestro of Bergamo, as Donizetti was called, has focused more closely on this work, learning from the demise of some of his operas due to their hasty writing. In addition, Donizetti had already lost the competition with Vincenzo Bellini to write the best musical and stage work. Bellini's opera Puritani was well received by audiences and critics, and his Marino Falieri failed.

The opera Lucia di Lammermoor is one of the top achievements in the work of Gaetano Donizetti.
The most characteristic features of his music are expressed in it in the brightest way: cordiality, warmth, sincerity and exquisite melody, saturated with deep emotionality. The arias, ensembles and large mass scenes in Lucia di Lammermoor are among the highest achievements in all of the composer's work and represent one of the top achievements of the "white canto" style.

The music radiates a kind of romantic charm that perfectly fits the plot. In Lucia di Lammermoor, Donizetti has achieved something extremely valuable. Without abandoning the principle of the virtuoso brilliance of the vocal parts, he did not allow the dramatic unity to be violated. The musical characteristics are given with extreme clarity. The images of the individual characters are sustained in a straight line with plastic relief.

The premiere of Lucia di Lammermoor took place on September 26, 1835 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples and was a resounding success. Donizetti's work soon caused all other operas written on the same subject to be forgotten. Only a year and a half later, Lucia di Lammermoor was staged in Paris, Vienna and other major music centers with great success.

Since then, this opera has been performed in all theaters around the world, and Lucia's part is one of the most attractive for coloratura sopranos.
